This unfortunately also left the door open for socialist influence to creep West. Which brings me to one other reason: the CIA used its media operations to shut Joseph McCarthy down under orders from Eisenhower—who viewed McCarthy as a potential Hitler—after the FBI reported to Eisenhower that Joseph Kennedy was considering backing McCarthy for President in 1956; this left a stigma against anyone who tried to expose Communist influence.
