Many queers have either been molested in their youth, or engaged in homosexual activities as young teen and it stuck. OTOH, you also now have some who, since it had sort of become "cool" and/or "edgy", some time back ( now it's the crazy "TRANSGENDER"; especially for very young children ), decided that they would be one.
The same thing is true for lesbians.
