Newt Gingrich: Trump, New York’s Wollman Rink and the Congressional Budget Office

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is simply incompatible with the Trump era.

President-elect Trump won as an entrepreneurial change agent who would "drain the swamp," get Washington under control, take charge of the bureaucracies, and get things done in an entrepreneurial, common sense way.

The Congressional Budget Office is the opposite of these commitments.

It is a left wing, corrupt, bureaucratic defender of big government, and liberalism. Its scoring of ObamaCare was not just wrong, it was clearly corrupt. CBO literally brought in the architect of ObamaCare to be the adviser on scoring the very ObamaCare legislation he helped write. The score was a lie. It was so wrong it was totally indefensible. A year later the CBO produced a new score that was so much more expensive it was clear ObamaCare would have been defeated if it had been the original score.

In the four years during which I was Speaker of the House, CBO was consistently difficult to work with. If we hadn't fought with them constantly we would never have balanced the budget.

President-elect Trump presents a perfect test case for CBO in one of his best stories, the repair of the Wollman Rink in New York’s Central Park.

This story is told brilliantly in Trump's bestselling book, “The Art of the Deal.”

Every citizen should read the chapter on fixing the Wollman Rink.

> “ Its scoring of ObamaCare was not just wrong, it was clearly corrupt.”

It certainly was, and deceptive as hell too. Anyone working inside the CBO at the time knew what they were doing was wrong, very wrong and dishonest.

The only possible leniency offered to the CBO lemmings is that the democrats in Congress and in Obama’s White House put unauthorized coercive pressure on the CBO to score it the way it was scored which was to defer costs out beyond a number of years so that it could be declared budget worthy.

But CBO managers should have known better and should have blown the whistle. But they didn’t because they are cowards and they should be punished as the cowards they are. All they succeeded in doing was to defer their punishment to beyond the Obama years. The smart ones put their Beltway McMansions up for sale in Fairfax Country and Bethesda.

I would advise the Trump Admin to review those recently retired for dereliction, malfeasance, and dishonoring their oaths and to adjust their pensions down harshly if not eliminate them altogether. Let that be a lesson to those still in service who might think they can carry out deception against the American people in the future.

Trump hires the best companies to do the right job, whether foreign or domestic. In the case of the skating rink, he hired a Canadien company. I see no problem with this as long as they were the best suited to do the job.

Diogenes would have died a blind man if he had spent his life in DC looking for an honest man. The partisan hacks are to be found in every nook and cranny, every agency and department. The CBO is only as honest as their leaders...which doesn’t say a good deal about their character.

DJT should drain the swamp completely. Those that haven’t worked for the American people should be facing penalties and face the fingers pointed in their direction.

There once was a time when honest persons were in charge. Alas!, that has not been the case in our lifetime.

Who runs the Congressional Budget Office? If it’s a creature of Congress, and the Republicans are in charge of both houses of Congress, why can’t they do something about the CBO?

"Diogenes would have died a blind man..."

Well, I did die, but not blind, just with cataracts.

And I NEVER go near DC anymore; it's great for my friend, Don Quixote, but a waste of time for me.

"Keep your lantern lit."

Quite some time ago I switched from whale oil to fossil fuel, so I'm in good shape there.

And, at my age, carrying around a giant whirlygig just ain't an option.

Yup, but many around here think Gingrich is a self serving, senile, dottering old man whose time has passed.
