Also, I’ve heard Barry Soetoro for years, but not sure where that came from.

Barry Soetoro was his name when he came back from Indonesia.
He had been adopted by Lolo Soetoro and became an Indonesian citizen.
Not sure if he ever legally changed it back, or renounced his Indonesian citizenship. He may have made that trip to Pakistan in 1981 on an Indonesian passport.
It’s also possible he entered Occidental and subsequent schools as a foreign student using his Indonesian passport.
The most plausible explanation I’ve heard for the SS# is that Grandma had access to the original owners estate records when he died and “borrowed” it for Barry.
It’s his stepfather’s last name, the one who lived in Jakarta. Also Muslim.
I can explain two of the concerns perplexing you:
Barry Soetoro was the name he was given and/or known by when he was adopted by Lolo Soetoro, his Indonesian stepfather. I do not know how long he continued to use that name.
He was not the Editor of the Law Review, but merely the President, a ceremonial position requiring not much of anything. He attained that lofty summit due his melanin enhancement.
