I saw a freeze happen there about 20 years ago. Vehicles coming over from Truckee were on hard pack snow but around Glenshire, right where this video is the road became shear ice. Once a vehicle began sliding there was no way to stop. Some cars and trucks hit each other and kept sliding in clumps, four, five, or more together until the first one hit something and they would crash and come apart.

Some would stick against the guard rail or center median, but then others sliding down would hit them and start another clump. It was total chaos and devastation for the people who drove past the airport turn off before CHP could close the road.

Similar story: Early 80’s, 76 3/4 ton Suburban 4X4, floor shifter with granny gears, lifted with 36” snow tires, winch. Start of Blue canyon, CHP check point, officer asked me if I would lead the last group over Donner before they closed the road. 5mph, whippers on high, 4 wheeling, stopping every 10 minutes to clear the glass, no snow tracks, drove using the snow markers on the side of the highway. Hands hurt for three days after that little trip.
