The Senate Armed Services Committee passed the waiver on Thursday that will allow retired Gen. James Mattis to serve as defense secretary so soon after leaving the Marine Corps, sending it to the full Senate for approval.
The vote was 24-3. Democratic Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren all voted against the waiver.
The committee approved the exemption following a wide-ranging confirmation hearing where Mattis fielded questions about threats facing the country, acquisition programs and how his time in uniform will affect his role as the department's top civilian.
The law requires an officer to be out of uniform for seven years before stepping into the civilian defense secretary role. Mattis retired from the Marine Corps in 2013 after more than 40 years of service, meaning Congress will need to approve an exemption to the law for him to serve.

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. The US military doesnt have that problem.
Add to this one I saw in a town near a prison, “Rehabilitation through Reincarnation”.
Why don’t they come up with one forbidding politicians from working for media outlets for five years after leaving office? :)
I support the waiver, for which I know there is precedent. But just out of curiosity — wouldn’t that be an ex post facto law?
Happiness is knowing somewhere people put these bumper stickers on their cars—fearlessly.
It’s actually a good law. The senior levels of the military are filled with jealousy, backbiting and score settling. The law was intended to minimize the potential for a retired General to come in the next day and fire all his rivals. You need look no further than Civil War and WWII history to explain the rivalries in the senior military service. That said, I support the waiver for Mattis. He is an exceptional candidate who will serve this country and President well.
Am I the only one that thinks having a Defense Secretary named “Mad Dog” promotes peace, because nobody will take him lightly?
winning!
Stands With a Fist no like Mad Dog. Ancestors in Little Big Horn no fight white man, but feel discrimination from White Man due to high cheek bones. Stands With a Fist always chosen to play Indian when children play Cowboys and Indians due to high cheek bones.
Elizabeth Warren, Pocahontas. Who says American women need to be raped by Muslims to prove their tolerance, and then kill their babies at Planned Parenthood.
I think it’s actually the other way around. A liberal NYC radio host suggested that anyone who goes by the nickname “Mad Dog” is all bark and no bite. LOL.
The intent was so that the military was always under civilian control. There are exceptions, like Mattis and Marshal. So I don't think the law is necessarily a bad thing in and of itself.
I’m watching a House committee panel that’s considering the waiver for Gen. Mattis and it doesn’t look good. Am I missing something here?
Yeah, but it goes to the House committee now, and they had previously requested that Mattis appear before the committee for questioning. Mattis agreed to present himself for such questioning. However, the Trump transition team stopped any such presentation, and no the House committee must vote on the “waiver” (which is identical in wording to the senate bill for same) without having the chance to ask Mattis any questions. So, as I type this, the House committee is raising Cain that its inability to question Mattis subverts Congress’s role and renders it irrelevant. Thus, none of the Dims are going to vote for the waiver, and it is likely that enough Repubs will join them to submarine Mattis getting the requisite waiver to serve as Sec’y of Defense.
Never forget that The FRAUD doesn’t like pro-American slogans, or that half of American voters twice elected an avowed enemy of all for which America stands.
