FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Dan and Janice Kovacs and their two children were passing through airport security when the gunfire erupted. They were shoeless with wallets, passports and carry-on items chugging along a conveyer belt when they sprang into the mass of people running to safety.
Now they're among stranded travelers at Fort Lauderdale trying to recover what the airport director says are 25,000 pieces of luggage, cellphones and other belongings separated from their owners during Friday's shooting rampage.
"We have no IDs, we have no passports, no money," Janice, 39, said Saturday afternoon, wearing sandals borrowed from a brother-in-law. "We just had to leave our stuff and run."
"All our stuff is being processed. We might not even get that until Monday. I have an 11-year-old who is freaking out. This has been traumatic for her," she said.
The shooting Friday afternoon, which killed five people and wounded six, also stranded about 12,000 outgoing and incoming travelers, many returning from cruises or arriving ahead of the usual Saturday departures of the massive ships based in the tourism hub's Port Everglades terminal.
Some travelers were kept on planes for more than seven hours while police put the airport on lockdown; others scrambled to protected corners or were hustled out onto the tarmac. The Kovacs, on the way home to Vancouver, British Columbia, after a Caribbean cruise, went out onto that rough surface barefoot.

They separate you from EVERYTHING. I hate the TSA ritual. They need to find a better way.
= = =
They do this on purpose, to get you anxious and vulnerable.
Been there ... hate it.
>Give them back their freaking things. Police dont need their wallets. For crying out loud.
Sure they do...How else can they afford everything in the ‘17 Tactical Gear Catalog?
Some guys in the House wrote a bill a number of years back to privatize TSA. I think we’ll be seeing that come back up and soon.
Everybody see the new TMZ footage of what Santiago was shooting at today?
Does Santiago strike you as somewhat of a gear queer himself?
“They do this on purpose, to get you anxious and vulnerable.”
Yep. Psychological. Just wanting to make sure you understand that you are NOT in control. (And you’re definitely NOT!) We have to fly for a cruise next month and I’m not looking forward to it.
If nothing else is done to revamp TSA check-in, they MUST permit you to keep your wallet w/ID and money. Cell phone is important, too, but I expect electronics must go through the conveyor belt x-ray.
The shooting was in baggage claim — at Terminal 2, I believe. When that was under control there was a report (it was wrong) that there was shooting in a different terminal — #1, I think. That’s when security lines and departure check-in counter area were cleared out. (At least I think that’s the way it went down.)
I've been wondering what might happen to someone who decided on their own to go out to go back into the secure area from baggage claim, or out one of those doors from the jetway to the tarmac, even if there was a shooting going on.

Which was.....? (haven’t run across it)
While your stuff is getting scanned, you at the same time are walking through the scanner. You aren’t separated longer than 1 minute. It’s been that way before TSA and it’s like this any airport you travel thru
Yes - your ID does not set off the metal detector. I fly almost every week. I Never use the dishes for loose stuff. I pack everything in my carry on bag so it is all together.
In any large tragedy (like this) the system is easily overloaded. Like a hurricane and people wondering why they can’t find water three days after the event.
I like the previous poster’s thought of putting everything in your carry-on bag. I do that too, mainly to help speed up the whole process of going through and so I won’t foget something. But now have another reason (as rare as it might be). I doubt I’ll pack an extra pair of shoes in the carry-on though!
Yes, I think they can find a wallet amongst the stuff. We all know how long government takes. If someone had my wallet for days I’d be freaking out. These people have no money on them.
250 groups x 100....
“Ok Trump Supporters in Fort Lauderdale”
Broward County...lowest per capita Trump supporters in the state. Most of Broward County is probably working hard to figure out how they can get any handouts designated for stranded travelers.
What footwear do you recommend for the airport?
I prefer a good, laced boot. Leather is good, but the Asolo Fugitive GTX is nice.
Privatize...pffft!
The REAL hero will be the guy with the balls to pass legislation that ERADICATES the TSA.
“Mineta’s Morons” should be a short-run “Reality TV” series somewhat less intelligent than “McHale’s Navy.”
What if I said... privatize using Mossad’s profiling matrix?
;)
True. I fly a few times a year. I always wear real shoes, eat something just before every flight, have a small snack in the carry on and think about what in my bag can be used defensively.
