The beasts who call themselves Liberals these days are the antithesis of liberal thought. They’re nothing but petty Fascists who have kidnapped the word and throw it out like a talisman. Nat really was a liberal. And even if Nat refused to acknowledge Him, may God speed the man to his rest.

I always liked Hentoff.

Imagine how hard it must have been to be a pro-life liberal.

He was always worth reading.

A sensible man.

RIP, good sir.

RIP. Hentoff was also a ferocious defender of free speech in the face of the stifling political correctness that has consumed the liberal side of the political spectrum in America. It cost him a couple of jobs, but he never whined once.

Instead of shouting down those with other opinions, he welcomed healthy debate and discussion, and would even find common ground with conservatives, such as being pro-life. I just wonder what his comments were on SJW’s (Oy vey!).

This nation has lost an original.

I was thinking about USSC Justice Byron White - nominated by JFK - who wrote in his scathing dissent to RoeVWade that it was "an exercise in raw judicial power".

So anyway, thanks for reminding me about Moynihan, because I just knew that there were three principled liberals of that era, but could only think of White and Hentoff, and for the life of me I just couldn't remember who the 3rd one was! How could I have forgotten about Daniel Patrick Moynihan? :-)

RIP. A rare, honest liberal.

And what's more one who could write without resorting exclusively to sophomoric snark.

Tough shoes to fill. I loved his columns in the Washington Times. Sad to see him go.

He was sane, smart, moral, and a fine writer. He called himself a liberal, but he was worthy of respect.

Rest in peace.

You might want to also consider Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson of Washington state. Jackson was liberal on economic issues, moderate on social issues, but arch-conservative on defense.

Courage, intellectual honesty, and gentleness - that’s a rare combination on either side of the aisle, and that makes him a person who’ll be sorely missed. I’m proud to add my prayers for his soul to those already offered.

“Obama has little, if any, principles except to aggrandize and make himself more and more important. You see that in his foreign policy. Obama lacks a backbone — both a constitutional backbone and a personal backbone. This is a man who is causing us and will cause us a great deal of harm constitutionally and personally. This is the first administration that has scared me.” Nat Hentoff.

Nat was truly a principled man a TRUE liberal in that he respected others’ opinions and their right to them. I once had the pleasure of meeting him in Washington Square Park and said that while I didn’t always agree with him I respected his opinions and the fact that he extended that courtesy to others. He answered, “That’s what it’s all about!” If only other liberals were like him this would be a much more civilized world.
