A Chinese nuclear-powered submarine was reportedly docked at a port in Pakistan, sources privy to the development said here on Friday. They added that it could be there as Beijing was selling eight submarines to Islamabad, four of which were to be built in the port city of Karachi.
The image, dating back to May 2016, was found on Google Earth. It appears to be a nuclear submarine, one of the latest with China, according to experts.
The submarine was later seen crossing the Malacca Straits in June 2016. Submarines have to surface while crossing straits as per protocol.
Chinese submarines have been spotted in the Indian Ocean, which has been usually attributed to providing protection against piracy.
Speaking on the presence of the Chinese Navy's ships and submarines in Pakistan in December last year, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba had said that India was keeping a close eye on them.
"We have capability and assets to take on any force which is deployed, and if and when this happens, we have plans in place to tackle it," the Navy Chief had said
Sources from the Navy said Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean was being noticed and constantly monitored.
The boats were usually sent with other ships for providing security to Chinese merchant vessels from pirates, which according to sources may not be the real reason.
China's growing territorial claims in the South China sea have caused tension in the region, with the US vocally pitching for freedom of navigation in international waters.
Both India and China were part of Shared Awareness and Deconfliction which was established to coordinate the efforts of the military forces conducting counter piracy in the western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.
Pakistan is buying eight submarines from China. The first four submarines were expected to be delivered by the end of 2023 while the remaining four will be assembled in Karachi by 2028.
State-run media in Pakistan including Radio Pakistan had reported that the $5 billion deal has been detailed by senior naval officers to the parliamentary committee that handles defence.
Are we still stupidly giving Pakistan foreign aid money?
I wonder how well a Chinese nuclear submarine is made and how well it’s maintained? The Chinese are known for low quality and fakery like baby formula or gypsum wallboard that’s toxic and products of all kinds that fall apart or don’t work. The Russians had trouble with nuclear submarines but they had good scientists, engineers and good metallurgy. I suspect the PLA Navy will soon be (if it isn’t already) a floating disaster.
I hope it’s “our” money for tanks, and not for nuclear submarines!
The Chinese have the knowledge but their quality control is suspect because cheating is considered acceptable in China. Cheating is almost an art form.
Maybe it will have accident and mysteriously sink upon leaving Pakistan...
we still stupidly giving Pakistan foreign aid money?””
Absolutely. I was sent on a disease-containment educational mission funded by the state department when Hillary was in charge. The 4 day course was delivered in Kuala Lumpur at the Ritz Carlton for 25 Pakistani faculty members at a ridiculous cost of $350 thousand. All expenses of the Pakistanis were paid including flight, and 5 days in the Ritz. Made me want to puke. I told them it was my last trip for them.
I'm old enough to remember when exactly the same was being said (and was true) about anything from Japan.
American Edward Deming is credited with turning the quality situation around in Japan and is responsible for their quality reputation today. The Deming Award is given annually to the company who best exemplifies his teachings.
I remember as a child having tin toys (cars) from Japan that still had Campbell Soup labels (paint) on the inside of the car. They were made from scrap cans.
So let me get this right; we borrow money from china, give it to pakistan in the form of military aid, and they buy chinese subs. Do I understand this correctly? /sarc. China has to be laughing their collective a$$ off at our stupidity. Hopefully Trump puts an end to this nonsense.
Occasionally, you will meet an intellectually honest Harley owner that will admit AMF Harleys were junk compared to contemporary Honda motorcycles.
a name i haven’t heard in years.

We shouldn’t let our stereotypes about Chinese quality or strategies cloud our judgement. Russian collaboration, stolen secrets and Chinese leaderships dedication to the program have the potential to create some decent subs. Plus economically, they do well. They can produce 8 subs under contract for $5B when out new 12 sub purchase will cost $126B. I know.... Apples to oranges, but we need to look at overall strategy and not underestimate them.
Right now there’s a Navy sonar tech in Hawaii listening to Chinese subs off the coast of Hainan Island and in the Yellow sea.
He is tracking each one by hull nr.
Even other subs can hear them from over 100 miles. And it manifests the old submariner’s adage: Silent or dead.
I remember this from years ago.

It’s not a Pakistani port. It’s a Chinese port in Pakistan.
TI did.
I installed an SPC program in one of their chip-making lines when I was there.
