FRANKFORT For the first time in nearly a century, a Republican is holding the speakers gavel in Kentuckys House of Representatives.
House Speaker Jeff Hoover was confirmed to the position via acclimation during Tuesdays opening of the 2017 General Assemblys 30-day session.
In his opening remarks to the chamber, Hoover said the state faces a number of challenges that need to be resolved and that his focus as speaker will be doing what he can to address them.
He also had a message for lawmakers in both parties: the election season is done. Republicans wrested control of the House from Democrats in the Nov. 8 elections, winning a 64-36 supermajority.
To those of you in the majority party, those who were a part of making this historic day in the Commonwealth of Kentucky possible, my message is the campaign is now over, said Hoover, R-Jamestown. Its a part of history, and the job before us is now to begin the governing process.
To those in the minority party, we know full well the position you are in. Were well aware of the many feelings of uneasiness and the uncertainty that you are experiencing. As your speaker, as the speaker for all Kentuckians, it is my intent to do all that I can do to be responsive and inclusive of every member in the legislative process.
Republicans wasted little time in putting their priority legislation in motion, giving first readings to House Bill 1, a right-to-work bill; House Bill 2, a pre-abortion ultrasound bill; House Bill 3, legislation to repeal prevailing wage on public works projects; and House Bill 10, which would ratify Gov. Matt Bevins reorganization of the University of Louisvilles board of trustees.
All are set for committee hearings on Wednesday.

They better or we will vote them out so fast in two years their heads will spin like “ HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER “ Eric Cantor ( now selling used cars
?). THIS IS PEOPLE POWER!!
Dear repubs...we remember your 8 years of heing quislings. Stop or you are gone.
How about starting by freeing the political prisoners?
Try to find another state that has a man in jail for 23 years for killing his wife, you can’t.
Add in that this man was a Christian missionary and that his prosecutor, was arrested by the feds and found guilty of extortion.
They went from a minority to a super-majority!
Wow!
On election night I watched the returns flow in from eastern Kentucky and finally believed from his huge margins Trump would likely win the election.
Never considered what it meant for the state government.
Good to see the democrats kicked out of power here in KY. I hope the republicans can get some good things done now. With the make-up of our state government, led by Bevin, and the federal government, led by Trump, I feel very optimistic about the future of our state and country.
What eight years is that?
Stumbo is not only out as Speaker but out of the House altogether. One of the last two power brokers of the old Lundergan establishment out of power - Alison Lundergan Grimes is the last one standing as Secretary of State.
Sorry...I.meant 80.
Great news. Spent a lot of time in KY many years ago, when the Democrats controlled everything - there was scarcely a functioning Republican Party.
You mean all the pearl clutching over obozo appointing Garland was a nothing burger
Yes, the GOP party headquarters was and still is a house in Frankfort. Meanwhile the Dem headquarters is a large office building...difficult to believe they will have need of that much longer or even be able to afford to keep and maintain it and have it filled with staff formerly needed to run the political machine.
Yep. Alison-loves-0bama-and-hillary and andy-loves-to-sue-Bevin are the only two dems left standing.
