Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has added New York’s top federal public defender to his legal team as he appeals his death sentence, filings show.

A judge approved David Patton, the head of New York’s influential federal public defenders office, to represent Tsarnaev, 23, on Friday.

I could agree with that, but unfortunately that isn’t reality. The reality is that he’ll be able to run the full gamut of appeals and it will drag on for years. With that in mind, giving him the best possible defense lawyer at the trial makes sense. That removes incompetent defense counsel as a basis for future appeal and makes actual execution more likely.
