I have posted numerous times that I was a peace officer and saw the job changing around the 80’s. The reason was LAWYERS looking to sue. For example, I arrested a guy for public intox. Took him home, up three flight of steps and handed him over to the wife. He later tried to traverse the stairs, fell two flights and I was sued for not arresting, incarcerating him. Cost the city a lot of money. From then on, NOOOOO breaks for PI,DUI,D&D or damn near anything.
I think part of the problem originated around the time when every department, regardless of how small, or the area of jurisdiction, felt the need to have their own SWAT teams and or take on a more military tone.
I definitely remember those days.
In the right jurisdictions, Cop would more than likely have your car towed home while he would drive you there.
I had a case while in DC I was detained and they ‘hid’ my car. Took me to the Precinct (while they were hiding car), called a cab, made sure I had enough money, had cab take me to Virginia with cabbie given strict orders to take me HOME only.
I had ‘fallen asleep’ at a light and a Detective friend of mine ran on the scene and arranged everything.
Knowing the Detective and more than a few cops because of my work also helped.
