I’ll always remember fondly doing a float trip with the extended family in the Ozarks. I ended up in the bow of the canoe with my older brother, a graduate of Annapolis and former Navy officer. My 7 year old daughter was in the middle with the cooler that had our lunch.
We found ourselves swept into and up against a flat rock. The canoe slipped sideways and jammed against the rock. Anyone who has ever been in a canoe in a stream knows what happens next. Slowly and inexorably the canoe began to roll over and sink. I was yelling at my brother about what to do and he couldn’t even figure out port v starboard. He then confessed he had never been in a canoe before. I grabbed the lunch and put it on the rock. I then grabbed my daughter and put her on the rock. My daughter still gives me grief about grabbing the cooler first.
“My daughter still gives me grief about grabbing the cooler first.”
If it didn’t have beer in it you really have no excuse!
” I grabbed the lunch and put it on the rock. I then grabbed my daughter and put her on the rock. My daughter still gives me grief about grabbing the cooler first.”
