Harry Reid on the Democratic Party: ‘It Appears We’re Going to Have an Old-Folks’ Home’

In a lengthy profile piece in New York Magazine, outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid discussed the future of the Democratic Party, especially with him the prospect of him no longer being in the Senate to act as the vocal opposition to the incoming Trump administration.

While covering Reid speaking to his staffers earlier this month ahead of his final weekly lunch with Senate Democrats, the Nevada Senator was observed giving his thoughts on the possibilities the party had for the White House in 2020.

Another aide brought up Joe Biden’s recent remark that he was thinking about running for president in 2020. “Would you support him?” she inquired.

“It depends on who’s running,” Reid replied. “It appears we’re going to have an old-folks’ home. We’ve got [Elizabeth] Warren; she’ll be 71. Biden will be 78. Bernie [Sanders] will be 79.”

One younger potential candidate that has been talked about quite a bit is Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who is currently only 47. Other possible contenders who won’t be in their 70s are Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

The piece also covered the realization among Democrats on Capitol Hill that Reid won’t be around any longer to act as an attack dog against Republicans and President-elect Donald Trump. Democrats acknowledge that his successor as Minority Leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), was anointed more because of the feeling that he’d “be a very good majority leader under President Hillary Clinton, and that’s what he thought he was signing up for.”

Apparently a one eye fool is like a broken clock. There are miniscule moments it is right.

another happy byproduct of the midterms in 2010 and 2014 is that the republicans absolutely exterminated their bench. there have been no young stars developing in the minor leagues, preparing to make a splash in the big league.

we killed them all.

As for you Harry, let’s just skip the ‘old folks home’ and head straight for the mortuary where you belong.

Well, Hairy, when you spend a great deal of your party’s energy and money supporting the killing off the generation of children who would replace your aging members, you have made a hideous error. You have no one else to blame except your own constituency and members. Live with it. It’s your fault.

Look out for Kamala Harris, wackjob uber lib AG of California. She’s a real rising star in the moonbat party.

yeah. I give you Harris. she’s a check in more than one minority box, which is all that matters for the dems. but I don’t know if she’s viable nationally.

Look for Gavin Newsome (former mayor of San Francisco) and Kamala Harris (incoming junior senator from California) to become prominent national figures and to make presidential runs within the next couple of election cycles. Both are California Democrats, heavily liberal and both would be a disaster for the nation, as they have been for California. But both are young.

“I don’t know if she’s viable nationally.”

Obama was a freshman Senator who most of us had never heard of, when he ran in the 2007 primary. The press fell in love with him, and the rest is history.

I don’t think the press will have any trouble elevating Kamala Harris to national status. She’s better known than Obama was in 2004.

When you take away the "old folks," the Democrat Party is nothing but Blacks, Hispanics, Feminists and Queers.

Not a bright future.

I dunno. myself, I doubt that it is any more likely that harris and newsome will be national candidates any more than boxer or pelosi are — or with any more success than governor moonbeam managed

Haven’t heard Booker is Muslim.

In order to run nationally, Booker will either marry a beautiful celebrity, or come out of the closet (or, these days, he could do both).

She’s the one who scares me the most. She’s got all the right demographic boxes checked, and could be reasonably thought by delusional liberals to represent an extension of 0bama’s legacy.
