I hope you're not arguing that Republicans should adopt the Democrats' standard of behavior. As I mentioned above, I hold Republicans to a higher standard.Why would you assume that is figurative? Granted that’s the only logical assumption, but Sarah Palin spoke of “targets” - and that was taken literally.

Just like the Democrats who are politicians do. And there are no Republicans who are journalists, because that is a closed fraternity.
The Democrats have never seen a Republican with chutzpah, and they really believed that with the unlimited chutzpah of their Clintons and Obamas they would win forever. The journalcrats waged war on Trump, and Trump stunned them when he out-chutzpahed Hillary.
Naturally the Democrats - whether journalists or not - are worried.
