The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office is the oldest law enforcement agency in Suffolk County, New York, having been established in 1683. The Sheriff's Office currently employs over 1200 people, including 898 correction officers, 254 deputy sheriffs, and 130 civilian personnel.

Its Office and Business Operations are located at the Riverhead Correctional Facility, 100 Center Drive South in Riverhead (although it bears the Riverhead name, it is actually south of the Peconic River in Riverside in the Town of Southampton).

The Sheriff's Office participates in various task forces, such as the East End Drug Task Force, and the specially created joint task force with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to investigate and arrest gang members, the Drug Enforcement Administration, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, and the United States Marshals Service, undercover assignments, and also conduct criminal investigations.

The Sheriff of Suffolk County is the highest ranking Law Enforcement Officer in Suffolk County and is elected to the term of four years. In 2012, the Sheriff's Office became a New York State Accredited Law Enforcement Agency.

The Suffolk County Police Department has over 2,400 sworn members, well over 600 civilian members and almost 400 School Crossing Guards.

The department provides all police services for the Suffolk County Police District, comprised of the five western towns of Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown.

The department also provides various police services, as needed, for eight incorporated villages within the five western towns which maintain their own police departments, as well as for the eleven town and village police located in the five eastern towns of the county.

The nine hundred square miles of Suffolk County are located on Long Island and are separated from the City of New York by only twenty miles.

"Suffolk County Sheriff Reverses Sanctuary Policy Before Trump Takes Office"

This is wonderful news for Suffolk County, NY residents like myself. You see, local police in specially designated sanctuary cities do not investigate or report a person’s immigrant status to federal authorities unless they have a convincing reason.

Our foolish Sheriff stopped holding immigrants wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in September 2014.

This policy reversal has already achieved results. Between December 1 and December 21, ICE has already taken seven illegal immigrants into custody who were living in Suffolk County.

Go Trump!

DeMarco states that this policy reversal came after careful “legal analysis” and had nothing to do with the incoming Trump administration

Ow-Kay, whatever the rationale, fantasyland or reality, the fact is that there's one less Sanctuary City. The tune of "Ten Little Indians" comes to mind.

Wonder which city next will do a "careful analysis".

...this policy reversal came after careful “legal analysis” and had nothing to do with the incoming Trump administration and his Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who are likely to have legal battles with locals that fail to comply with federal immigration law.

Translation: They realized they were breaking Federal laws and knew that Trump and Sessions will be upholding/enforcing the laws, so they decided they better get with it or suffer the consequences....

There are a couple of commuting suburbs out there, fairly conservative anyway, then it’s more rural, by NY standards. Maybe two hillary bumper stickers. No yard signs. A couple for Trump. Geograpically NY is rather red, actually. The anti beast are about 50% counting her senator steal at least. 60/40 pres. Bit still, 40% anti. And the are anti.

Untrue. Connecticut got rid of their sheriffs. They were turned into Marshals and then the state abused the hell out of them.

Marshals weren’t even exempt from the CT state gun laws.
