U.S. history no longer a requirement for history majors at George Washington University

George Washington University recently changed its requirements for history majors, removing previously key courses for the stated purpose of giving students more flexibility. The department eliminated requirements in U.S., North American and European history, as well as the foreign language requirement. Thus, it is possible that a student can major in history at GWU without taking a survey course on United States history.

Considering when I went to college I noticed my friends who took US history one of the texts assigned to them was Howard Zinn's POS book. So dropping a requirement for US History is not a big deal.

In general...fewer people are interested in history degrees because what exactly are you going to get back in terms of job opportunities after graduation? We need historians but there’s a limit for jobs later, and if you got stuck with $40,000 of college debt to get the degree....it might take a while to pay it off.

No, they still take stupid majors and run up huge debt in the process. Then they whine and cry. It is the circle of dumb.

That a school would not require US history is incredible. Then again, if I recall correctly, there is school in Michigan no longer requiring math. Guess education means something different today than in any past year.

..., there is school in Michigan no longer requiring math...

Why learn reading, writing, and arithmetic when computers can do it for you?

Lesbian basket-weaving is a dumb major. Liberal arts disciplines like History have value to business. Anything that makes you write a lot of papers.

Way back, long ago, when I took senior US history in high school I had a as a teacher a young radicalized teacher who was allowed to revamp history around this perspective, that also came from folks such as Oscar Handlin.

The hole left in my knowledge of anything important about American history has taken years to fill. But I did now that we had a lot of immigrants from places like Ireland and Italy and Germany, and African slaves and Chinese and .... and all sorts of people who were exploited. The Spanish and English exploration and colonization were ignored as was anything about American revolutionary history.

Next they’ll rename it Bambi U, because Washington was a slave owner....

Oh, Wait....acknowledging that would be U.S. History, so maybe the name is safe...

And this from an accredited school. Accreditations must come from cracked jack boxes.

There is an old saying that I’ve always respected. “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.”

Here we go again!

“Why learn reading, writing, and arithmetic when computers can do it for you?”

Why think at all, for the government will do it for you. The new mantra of the liberal left.

Based on the time spent on various topics in my high school American history class, the most important event in American history was the 1848 Seneca Falls convention for women’s rights. I had a very, very leftist teacher.

Faced with declining enrollment, from 153 majors in 2011 to 72 in 2015 to 83 in 2016, the history department decided changes were necessary, it reported.

Dumbing down.

Faculty said that the new system incentivizes the individual schools to create popular classes to attract students to boost revenue.

And there it is. Amazed they admitted the truth. Will parents even care their precious snowflakes are getting snow jobbed?

It’s amazing how many history graduates that I have met over the years that know nothing about history.

“......there is school in Michigan no longer requiring math.”......

Common Core has replaced the need for math. Can you imagine the number of buildings, bridges, airplanes, automobiles, etc., etc. that will be built without the need for math? Without math we may soon be driving a “Fred Flintstone stone wheeled vehicles again. Ah, progress has its rewards.

It wasn’t when I went to school in the 70s. I knew one guy who devoted all his time to electoral politics in 18th-century England. He was a little strange...
