Since the passage of NAFTA, the American economy, which was already stagnating, has gone downhill at an increasing clip. When we examine the details of the “free trade” agreement, it is easy to see why it has caused so much devastation.

It wasn’t a lack of competition. There were 4 major builders.

More builders now and better products. Funny how that worked.

The import invasion of the 1970’s was caused by the need for higher MPG cars. Those Jap imports were piles of crap. The Japs just listened to Deming first. That was the difference. Plus they had experience with making small cars. They got lucky.

Another point I’d like to make is how perverse it is for you to equate open markets with better quality; yet those same “high quality” imported cars that you praise were built and developed in Japan which is one of the most closed auto markets in the entire world.

You disagree that open markets = more competition, more choice, better quality and lower prices?

yet those same “high quality” imported cars that you praise were built and developed in Japan which is one of the most closed auto markets in the entire world.

So they have higher prices and less choice.

How does any of that make my claims in any way perverse?

And as those imports improved, they forced our domestic piles of crap to improve.

The completely closed Jap market improved faster than our completely open market, how’s that possible? By your logic the Japs should have built the worst cars in the world. It seems domestic competition in Japan by itself was sufficient impetus to produce a better car which disproves your BS theory.

Funny. Disagreeing with economic theory makes you stupid. I get it. Economics is NOT a science.

You may think that higher prices and less choice makes their market better than ours, but that's just more proof of your confusion.

By your logic the Japs should have built the worst cars in the world.

They were competing to sell cars in the US market. The US automakers didn't think they had to compete.

The worst cars in the world were probably built in Communist nations with no competition.
