The president of the U.N. General Assembly called Fidel Castro one of the 20th centurys most iconic and influential leaders at a memorial tribute Tuesday to the late commander of the Cuban revolution who led his country for nearly 50 years.
Peter Thompson told the ceremony in the assembly chamber that for many people Castro embodied the struggle of the global south for independence, justice and development.
He said Castros activism in pursuit of a fairer and more just world made him a symbol of resistance and inspiration to people across the world in Latin America, Africa and beyond.
Nearly 30 representatives of various groups and countries lauded Castro, who died Nov. 25 at the age of 90. But there were no speakers from Western nations.

Move it to Havana.
The UN is the official trade association for dictators.
Tell me again why Assad has to go?
lol...that Onion is hilarious!
I don't click on Ape Pee links. Just tell me if they list the countries.
Bingo!!!! My thought exactly.

Building cleared by US Marshals on January 22.
Let is be the new headquarters of US Economic Development Council or some such organization to further US Economic and Job interests.
Ridiculous.

Hitler was Iconic. Stalin was also Iconic.
“30 representatives of various groups and countries”

What asses! The UN belongs in some turd world capital, not in the USA.
To recap - on Castro’s orders after the revolution:
1/ Camilo Cienfuegos - his Cessna 310 blown out of the sky because he got too popular.
2/ Ernesto “Che” (HEY in Argentine slang) Guevara. Sent to and abandoned by Castro in Bolivia because he got too popular.
3/ Huber Matos - arrested; his genitals pierced. Imprisoned for 20 years because he spoke up about Castro’s communist leanings.
One more reason to get the hell out of the corrupt, anti-American UN.
Move it to North Korea.
