The Animal Cunning and Instinct of Donald Trump
National Review ^ | December 20, 2016 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 12/20/2016 6:11:09 AM PST by artichokegrower

The American middle classes, the Chinese, and Vladimir Putin have never been convinced that Ivy League degrees, vast Washington experience, and cultural sophistication necessarily translate into national wisdom. Trump instead relies more on instinct and operates from cunning — and we will soon see whether we should redefine “wisdom.”

Candidate Trump blasted the “free-loading” nature of NATO, wondered out loud why it was not fighting ISIS or at least Islamic terrorism, and lamented the inordinate American contribution and the paucity of commensurate allied involvement.

It appears that our NATO allies are helpless in preventing ISIS from attacking them in their own countries let alone taking ISIS on in Syria.

Wisdom is the ability to identify, expose and neutralize Socialist and Islamic operatives.

From what I have witnessed over the last 8 years, I have come to believe that NATO is Behind the Muslim Insurgence and Attacks in an effort to bring about World Government.

They are NOT HELPLESS, they are the SOURCE!

and he DID go to an Ivy League graduate school! But it’s his gut instincts that have taken him to where he is today. Gotta love it.

Don’t know why this thread has a fakenews keyword ... VDH analysis is spot on. As always.

They sure had no trouble bombing Libya and removing Gaddafi from power when he bucked the system.

“and he DID go to an Ivy League graduate school!”

I think that this infuriates them the most - that he should be one of them, yet opposes them like no one else ever has.

Of course, he didn’t got o Harvard or Yale...so maybe he’s not really “one of them” in their minds.

Either way, I’m glad for him and his experience and street smarts. I think that he’ll turn out to be one of the great Presidents, possibly even better than Reagan (because RR was handicapped by a Dem Congress). Time will tell.

I hope one of his areas of cunning is a private message to Putin that anything he does to fight Islamic terrorism will be O-K-BY-US! If Putin nukes Mecca, hey... it’s probably wrong, but it’s none of our business.

Trump has a habit of offering off-the-cuff unconventional observations — often unsubstantiated by verbal footnotes and in hyperbolic fashion. Then he is blasted for ignorance and recklessness by bipartisan grandees. Only later, and quietly, he is often taken seriously, but without commensurate public acknowledgement.

. . . Finally, Trump sensed that the proverbial base was itching for a bare-knuckles fighter . . . So Trump said the same kinds of things to Hillary Clinton that she, in barely more measured tones, had often said to others but never expected anyone to say out loud to her. And the more the media cried foul, the more Trump knew that voters would cry “long overdue.”

I was initially appalled when Trump announced; I lived in NYS when Trump was a Democrat and not setting an example for the children (e.g., had I known of that “pussygate” tape it would not have surprised me). Considering how much was said of Reagan’s divorce which was her wife’s doing, Trump’s personal history would have entirely a show-stopper as recently as 1992. Thanks, Bill . . .

I started out favoring Cruz - and right after I made a significant (for me) contribution, Cruz blundered egregiously. After rightly condemning the violence which prevented Trump’s planned Chicago rally, Cruz criticized Trump in the same breath. Understandable tho the criticism was in the context of Trump’s bareknuckled style, in context of Republicans being physically prevented from peaceably assembling - whatever the purpose - it was gauche.

Trump's instincts are right. NATO is basically a jobs program with no real mission anymore. It's a government funded organization where people drift by until they're ready to retire.

“As for the rest, after closing off the border, Trump will likely shrug and allow illegal aliens who are working, who have established a few years of residence, and who are non-criminal to pay a fine, learn English, and get a green card — perhaps relegating the entire quagmire of illegal immigration to a one-time American aberration that has diminishing demographic and political relevance.”

the usual from amnesty-loving NR
