Muted U.S. Response to China’s Seizure of Drone Worries Asian Allies
NY Times ^

BEIJING — Only a day before a small Chinese boat sidled up to a United States Navy research vessel in waters off the Philippines and audaciously seized an underwater drone from American sailors, the commander of United States military operations in the region told an audience in Australia that America had a winning military formula.

“Capability times resolve times signaling equals deterrence,” Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr. told a blue-chip crowd of diplomats and analysts at the prestigious Lowy Institute in Sydney, Australia, the leading city in America’s closest ally in the region.

In the eyes of America’s friends in Asia, the brazen maneuver to launch an operation against an American Navy vessel in international waters in the South China Sea about 50 miles from the Philippines, another close American ally, has raised questions about one of the admiral’s crucial words. It was also seen by some as a taunt to President-elect Donald J. Trump, who has challenged the One China policy on Taiwan and has vowed to deal forcefully with Beijing in trade and other issues.

Obama is arguing that you cannot draw a red line on the ocean. Therefore he should not be held accountable or expected to do anything.

The ANZACs have 3 legit options.
1. Sit tight, wait for Trump to get installed then soldier on as allies.
2. Change over to being the allies of PDRChina and be house broken as their pet.
3. Go officially ‘neutral’ and be the prey of all powers in that AO.

Obama is probably more upset at Donald Trump’s bold remarks for so-called ‘provoking’ China’s taking of our drone. This may account for his low key response. It’s similar to a child asking for his soccer ball back after it got caught in a neighbor’s Mulberry Tree. “No, you CANNOT have your filthy American ball back!!! It’s ours now. So go away!”

Help is on the way.

Surely Taiwan isn’t the only US Pacific ally to have come to realize this so far?

Trump is probably figuring to tell them to keep the drone at their expense , and send them a bill for $250 million

President Trump needs to let Navy commanders know that if they let the Chinese or any other nation humiliat us again that they will be up for court martial and drummed out of the service with no retirement. On top of the the rules of engagement need to be rewritten to give commanders the freedom to protect their ship and crewmen with force applied with extreme prejudice. If the Chinese try this again every Chinese ship within 100 nautical miles needs to be sunk.

Mulberry Tree....LOL...

My bro (14) and I (10) kinda got caught in a cherry Tree...The house back light went on. He was up the tree. I was behind the tree. The lady was looking for movement. Not to worry....we were totally frozen with fear.

The light went off. We escaped with a bag of cherries. Repentant?? I doubt it.

I recall some neighbors back in Detroit would point a Shotgun at any kids found hiding up in one of their big Oak trees.
The older kids used to have a ‘Lookout Box’ tied up in the branches. This lasted for one summer only. Next summer, the old man of the house had retired from General Motors . He stayed home all day, listening to the Tigers Baseball on radio, and drinking Strohs Beer. He was not interested in any unannounced guests, kids or not.

Also, Trump got a phone call from somebody that China doesn’t like. That absolves the Commander In Chief of responsibility for our assets around the world. It’s right there in the Constitution.

saying they will give it back means they have the power to keep it if they want to, there's nothing secret about it so by saying keep it, it takes the power away from them

Trump should say "Keep it, the first ones free. The next one you acquire will have to be paid for in blood."

“Not to worry....we were totally frozen with fear.”

That’s EXACTLY what the Racoons do at night in my yard should I flashlight them. They just freeze on their perches until I go away.

Yep, let China keep the drone and take one of theirs.

Whatever they return is probably bugged/compromised and will have to be destroyed.
