Yep. A good hangman is a skilled craftsman. It is not simply a matter of knowing how to tie a hangman's noose. You also have to properly calculate the length of the rope based on the per's height and weight.
If the rope is too long it results in decapitation. Too short and the perp swings around while he strangles to death. You want to break his neck without cutting his head off.
Just another artform that will die off unless the next generation picks it up.

Hanging if done right is quick, sure and relatively painless. Brtains master hangman could do the job in 15 seconds.
Works the same on everybody. Maybe they feel, but not for long. Lethal injection is not necessarily painless.

There actually were two forms of hanging - “short rope” and “long rope”. The short rope was strangulation, with the subsequent struggling, and the long rope, considered more humane, with the breaking of the neck. Each state had their reasons for choosing one over the other, I suppose.
He is the exception to the norm.
