A really GOOD lawyer could even get around the “cruel and unusual” stipulation. Executing the guilty by the same method they used *might* be cruel, but it would not be “unusual” to the perp, since he has used the method himself...

Are you Native American? Another old trick would be to wrap him in an old leather sack and leave him out in the sun to dry. Old leather because it take longer to shrink.

A better idea is to still assign the condemned with a given means, with the provision that, if that means is successfully challenged in court, the state will instead use the firing squad as default.

I am all in favor of using the firing squad, because it is inexpensive, requires no technical expertise or special equipment, can be legally carried out by ordinary lawmen, the rifles are pre-aimed, and even obvious chest bleeding can be mitigated with an absorbent vest. It is also very hard to challenge in court as “cruel or unusual”.
