President-elect Donald Trump has officially chosen Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke to serve as his interior secretary.

Zinke was an early supporter of Trump's and publicly sought a Cabinet post when Trump visited Montana in May. Trump's decision to tap Zinke for interior upends Senate Republican plans of recruiting the congressman to challenge two-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in 2018.

The people who work hard against the agencies and public lands issues out west say this is the worst choice he could have possibly made.

Why not have him serve two years and then challenge Tester anyway?

Because he needs to be on the ground in Montana running against Tester. He can't phone it in while filling an obscure cabinet post.

If he took the job he must not think he had much of a chance against Tester to begin with.

The main issue he opposes is transfer of federal land to the states. In most locations that idea is popular in the West but not as much in Montana. AT one time the state would acquire land, selling to private individuals (businesses were prohibited from bidding and then those individuals would sell the land for huge profits to mining interests. STicks in people’s minds.

Zinke “frequently votes against environmentalists on issues ranging from coal extraction to oil and gas drilling” and received a 3 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters.[21] Nevertheless, Zinke broke with most Republicans on the issue of transfers of federal lands to the states, calling such proposals “extreme” and voting against them.[22] In July 2016, Zinke withdrew as a delegate to the Republican nominating convention in protest of a plank in the party’s draft platform which would require that “certain” public lands be transferred to state control. Zinke said that he endorses “better management of federal land” rather than transfer.[23]

Sounds like he agrees with Trump.

“The main issue he opposes is transfer of federal land to the states. “

so does President Trump; he’s said it many times. he doesn’t trust states like California from doing things like prohibiting logging, grazing and oil production on any transferred lands.

Any chance those people may be spitting in the wind about nothing?

Zinke has reportedly opposed all proposals to return federally owned lands to the states.

Do these folks actually believe Trump will allow any of his appointees to thwart his agenda?
