Palmetto people have long thought “Loveable Lindsey” is a conservative, and nothing changes minds there.
I was. It was the "good ole boy" network that got him elected. In the primaries you had 6 challengers going against him. The "network" outspent each of the challengers and they fell flat. If they had united behind one challenger , such as Lee Bright, who is from the same district ( my district ) as Gowdy, he may have defeated Graham.
Democrats vote in our open GOP primary in huge numbers, and Graham wins them overwhelmingly.

We have a wide assortment.
The aforementioned good ol’ boys.
The yellow-dog Democrats, who will vote for a RINO in a pinch.
The Strom Republicans, who are so afraid of throwing out a Congressman out that they will keep electing some in-the-closet gay who does things to appease the Dems (to also keep a stranglehold on his power, e.g. amnesty) and says in his defense “the folks back home may get a little mad at this teehee”.
Then you’ve got the former Tea-Partiers who mutated into the Trump deplorables.
