The Standing Rock Sioux (on the south central border of North Dakota) also screwed their cousins the Ft. Totten Sioux out of the University of North Dakota's mascot the Fighting Sioux.

The Ft. Totten group loved the mascot and put up no fuss. In fact, UND sportswear with the old mascot remains popular on the Ft. Totten Reservation. The Standing Rock group wanted to shake down UND for scholarships, studies programs and such as the price for not opposing the mascot to the NCAA.

So the real Sioux, close to UND, got screwed and lost their mascot because UND didn't want to play the shakedown game and lacked the guts to fight them on it.
