Truman on the CIA. This editorial is very odd to be written 4 weeks after JFK was killed.
Truman wrote, near the end of his letter:
” I well knew the first temporary director, ... and the later permanent directors, Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg and Allen Dulles. These were men of the highest character, patriotism and integrity—and I assume this is true of all those who continue in charge.
>>>But there are now some searching questions that need to be answered. I, therefore, would like to see the CIA be restored to its original assignment as the intelligence arm of the President, and that whatever else it can properly perform in that special field—and that its operational duties be terminated or properly used elsewhere.
We have grown up as a nation, respected for our free institutions and for our ability to maintain a free and open society. There is something about the way the CIA has been functioning that is casting a shadow over our historic position and I feel that we need to correct it.”
The director of the CIA at the time of JFK’s death was John McCone.

HST founded the CIA, and he realized his creation had become something he didn’t want and became what/why he ended the OSS after WWII was over.

DR, I’m pinging you to excellent insight by one of our long time freepers ASA Vet. A man with over 28 years of MI collection. His proposal re the CIA is similar to what HST suggested for the CIA after JFK was killed and in your excellent find re that reality.

I can’t talk for all MI of course, but as a 28+ year analyst my opinion is just that, Mine.
CIA is not a producer of Intel, (except for their limited Humint activity.) They are rather a user of intel produced by real gathering / collecting units. They used to be tasked with multi-source fusion analysis to produce intel for the National Command.
That process won’t work when the Command dictates the result required. True Intelligence Product is neutral politically.
