9 things you should know about Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Trump's Interior pick
Inlander ^ | 12/09/2016 | Daniel Walters

President Elect Donald Trump looks like he's chosen Spokane's own U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers as his Secretary of the Interior. And already, we've seen a lot of dramatic statements casting her as a drill-happy pillager of public lands who spells doom for rivers and forests.....

1) She's pretty much a generic Republican.

McMorris Rodgers isn't someone like Raul Labrador, prone to publicly challenge the party's conventional wisdom. Instead, with the possible exception of her caution of military action in Syria, she's been a party-line Republican, more in the Rep. Eric Cantor mode...

So, is she an extremist? That depends on if you think the average Republican is an extremist. Compared to many of her Republican colleagues, she clearly isn't.

For example she didn't pass the purity test of Cliven Bundy supporter and state Rep. Matt Shea. Shea refused to endorse her, or anyone else, during this year's primary.

"I can tell you Cathy McMorris Rodgers has supported bills like the Energy and Infrastructure Act antithetical to Constitutional Conservatism and endorsed against and/or opposed every good conservative in this area," Shea wrote on his website.....

2) She supported selling off federal land-but just the federal lands already deemed "suitable for disposal' during the Clinton administration.

A lot of progressive blogs have been jumping all over a bill that McMorris Rodgers co-sponsored in 2011 that favored selling off several million acres of federal land. But it's important to separate this bill from more radical proposals that suggest, say, giving over federal lands almost entirely to the states.

Instead, this bill said that the Department of Interior should sell off the 3.3 million acres- about 1 percent of federal lands-that had been already labeled "suitable for disposal" by the Department of Interior during the Clinton administration......

Cathy McMorris Rodgers comes from the "leadership" of the GOP in the House, part of the "Ryan team".

We need someone to clean up the mess out West with Bureau of Land Management and the wrongs done to the small farmers and ranchers.

The Hammonds, the Bundy's etc. etc.

This story notes that State Rep. Matt Shea from her area of Washington state, who went to the Oregon Standoff protest and spoke to its leaders last January, has not been supportive of her and sees her as hostile to conservatives.

Shea is part of the Coalition of Western States, who want action to stop the federal government overreach against farmers and ranchers in the West.

McMorris Rodgers has not been supportive of the notion that the federal government needs to give large tracts of land back to the states.

We shall see how this plays out in a Trump Administration.

...sees her as hostile to conservatives.

This Eastern WA conservative, who used to vote for her, would echo that assessment.

Many of us want real change, not business as usual.

No window dressing changes either with symbolic statements or actions that create a debate with the liberal leftists and media, but don’t really change things.

It appears some of her views are decent, but I’d have to defer to folks who know her better.

I still believe Trump is hiring administrators to implement his plans.

I do not think he is hiring people to take over and run amuck.

She also needs to put the clamps on UN cars, trucks, and personnel on American soil. Making America great again absolutely requires uncompromising sovereignty. I’m assuming this comes under the Dept. of the Interior.

And importantly, as you point out, cut the Federal Gov’t overreach and reign in the Land Management goons.

As you also say, we’ll have to see. We’ll be watching.

Hey trump, two words Sarah Palin, be done with it and quit screwing around with the people who put you there. This is getting old.

I look at this as a bone thrown to Ryan with a end result that Ryan looses power.
She won’t be able to do much with Interior unless Trump agrees.

“McMorris Rodgers has not been supportive of the notion that the federal government needs to give large tracts of land back to the states.”

That is also Trump’s position. He doesn’t want blue states denying drilling permits

two words Sarah Palin

I used to like Sarah, I want to like Sarah, I guess I still can like Sarah, but to be honest, I don't think she really wants to be appointed to anything. She never ran for POTUS to everyone's surprise, and she seems happy just doing whatever it is she does these days. So I don't think its Donald screwing around with the people.

Well, that's the first sound argument I have heard for that position. At least someone is thinking about unintended consequences.

However, the whole thing about federalism is that if people don't like what is happening in their state, they can either vote new state lawmakers, or vote with their feet. If California, for example, wants to tax business and residents to the point of insanity, businesses and people will move out, like what has been occurring there for several years. There are always going to be smart states who want prosperity. I guess you would want to make sure one state cant strangle others by its bad policies though (like hijacking a major national energy source).
