As the FT noted, Trump's remarks dramatically raised the stakes with Beijing just a week after he broke diplomatic precedent by accepting a phone call from Taiwan’s leader, Tsai Ying-wen. Both incidents have tested the Chinese government’s diplomatic patience.
Predictably, overnight China responded and expressed "serious concern" on Monday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said the United States did not necessarily have to stick to its long-held stance that Taiwan is part of "one China", calling it the basis for relations. Beijing warned Donald Trump that the two countries will have “nothing to discuss” if the US president-elect’s incoming administration decides to discard the four-decade old “One China” policy.

There are plenty of places in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. that would be happy to take up the work.
Suit yourself, Chicoms.
China will lose big league.
Boy, I’m going to be that Trump will wish Clinton, Bush and Obama hadn’t drawn down the US Navy. I know. We used that money to pay for a DHS. Maybe they can keep the South China Sea open. What kind of nincompoops have been running our defense strategy since Bush I?
China is so heavily invested in us that they have no choice but to deal with Trump - he knows it and they know it. Part of “The Art of the Deal” is to use the leverage you have to your best interests.....
Wow, China TALKS UP A GOOD GAME.
Money talks, bullshit walks. China will come around.
Only a person who believes in something could accomplish this!
40 years without accepting a phone call congratulations from Taiwan. A lot longer than 8.
Maybe they’ll hold their breath and turn blue...
If China does not want to talk to the United States, soon to again be the most powerful military and economy in the world, that is their choice. They are entitled to be foolish.
Saudi/Chicom political action comittee?
Need to start sending the Chinese students back home.
Good strategery to go mine up some chips to bring to the table.
The beautiful thing in negotiations is when you put things on the table that they care about, but we don’t. It doesn’t affect the US at all if we keep up the charade of the last 40 years, but it really, really matters to China. Smart negotiators put those things on the table.
I really thought Beijing was going to invade Taiwan while the Paper Tiger was still in the White House. You know, get ‘er done while you can.
There’s still time, of course, but it doesn’t look like it now. Maybe they got sidetracked with the islands in the South China Sea.
Trump is playing hard ball but he is on thin ice. I am not sure we want to get into a game of chicken with the Chinese. They are absolutely ruthless. I like the way Trump is going after them and I think this is a great opening gambit, but if he has to follow through and actually end the “one China” policy, it could lead us to a world of hurt to make China our sworn enemy.
Then again, maybe it is for the best. I just think with all our debt China carries, they can hit us with that. They can be so ruthless.
I will say, “Go Donald!” If he can beat the Chinese at their own game, that would be hugely wonderful for us.
The two SEA countries with which I'm most familiar, Thailand and Philippines, have millions of workers who would be glad to once again be allowed to support themselves.
If any freeper has PE Trumps ear, I hereby volunteer to be his Ambassador to either of those nations.
