357 days from now, I will walk up to a U.S. Marine standing guard outside the White House and say, “I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”

The Marine will surely look at me and reply, “Sir, Mr. Obama is no longer President and no longer resides here.” I’ll thank him and walk away.

358 days from now I’ll approach the White House and say to the same Marine, “I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”

The Marine will again tell me, “Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is no longer President and no longer resides here.” I will thank him and again walk away.

359 days from now, I will approach the White House and speak to the same U.S. Marine, saying, “I would like to go in and meet with President Obama.”

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, will look at me and say, “Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I’ve told you already that Mr. Obama is no longer the President and no longer resides here. Don’t you understand?”

I’ll look at the Marine and say, “Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it.”

The Marine, being a patriot, will snap to attention, salute proudly, and say, “See you tomorrow, Sir!”

I plan to try it, and my guess is the Marine will recognize the joke at the first question and get a big kick out of it.
