Measure intended to protect people with disabilities who have wandered away
A bill meant to help those with developmental disabilities would allow government agencies to locate people with tracking devices, which has some concerned the measure gives the federal government too much authority and power.
In 2008, Kevin Curtis Wills, a 9-year-old boy with autism, jumped into a river near a park and drowned. In 2014, a 14-year-old boy with autism, Avonte Oquendo, left his school and drowned in a river.
Rep. Chris Smith (R., N.J.), who chairs the Congressional Autism Caucus and the Alzheimers Disease Task Force, introduced a bill called Kevin and Avontes Law, otherwise known as H.R. 4919, in an attempt to prevent these types of accidents from happening.
The legislation would permit the Justice Department to award grants to law enforcement agencies and non-profits for training and tracking devices to find individuals with autism or seniors with Alzheimers who have wandered away.
they already do that. it’s called a cell phone.
Saving lives?
Tracking cars through license plates and EZ Pass is well developed. A finer-grained system is needed. /S
No one ever mentions that if we had controlled our borders and immigration better, none of this would be needed.
I understand that the article is a bit different, tracking defectives, but that’s how the camel’s nose gets under the tent.
in theory, if I leave my tracking devices behind, I'm perfectly safe, right?
They already passed it in a sneak attack last Friday. Louie Gohmert was on Hannity and was beside himself about it. During the holidays they try to keep in session so Obama can’t make recess appointments. This gave them the opportunity to come in and did a voice vote with nobody there and get it passed.
No!
I don’t mean this in a cruel way, but what were they planning to do once the GPS led them to the bottom of a body of water?
As I recall, these kids weren’t reported missing quickly enough for GPS to have helped.
Oh God,
not another “and so it begins” thread.
Wrong assumption
If a family wants to monitor their child or senile relative they can privately purchase ‘asset protection’ and attach as a bracelet or device on the shoe or backpack.
No need for governmental agencies or organizations to be involved.
What types of tracking devices is the question. I don’t like the sound of this. Sounds too NWO / Mark of the Beast on the way to me.
Then it would seem like a good thing for the public and the mentally ill in wards to have tracking devices. My mom worked at a psych ward and said they just walked off the premises all the time.
Not everything is an open door to branding us all.
I think it’s a good idea.
Excellent point.
I should know better than to make a judgement until many FReepers have spoken :)
Buts it's naive to think the government is doing this just to locate people with disabilities and won't exploit it. As another four mite said, they are just trying to get the camel's nose under the tent. Obama's actions the last 8 years suggests he is a schill for the NWO. No doubt the man has been putting puzzle pieces into place for it the past 8 years.
The bill has Democrat support.
The bills original language authorized the Attorney General to insert tracking chips into individuals involuntarily!!!
Now, it’s been watered down quite a bit in favor of non-invasive and non-permanent types of tracking devices.’
This is a vast overreach by the federal government since it is unnecessary.
Families and doctors can decide to use non-invasive products on their own.
So you don’t want the police searching for missing children?
So you don’t want the police involve in searching for the missing?
Incrementalism will eventually make it a mandate especially when profit becomes a motivator with John McCainesque politics and greed get involved. The company that makes the tracking chips will pay for influence and make a fortune themselves whie stuffing the pockets of politicians and chipping us like cattle from birth.
Two of their favorite BS expressions and justification.....
It’s for the children and if it saves only one life it is worth it. Meanwhile tens of thousands of young Americans die in wars “to keep us free”.
