Nobody is giving the man a pass here. He lost his job and was convicted of a crime. But she did the same as he did. She was married as well. So they were both very guilty. She even knowingly accepted secret information which she was not allowed to have. But to the point of this article, there were other people, not the General but his wife and her own family who she (and he) hurt. Our disdain for her is not a reflection of his blame. Its a reflection of hers. She is the one complaining.

Agreed - there is no excuse, for any of the parties involved. I was just reacting to a perceived machismo condemnation of the woman.
