The controversial Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has kicked off its 11th Antarctic whale defense campaign with two Sea Shepherd vessels now on their way to the Southern Ocean to intercept the Japanese whaling fleet.

The two vessels, the Steve Irwin and the new Ocean Warrior, departed over the weekend from Melbourne and Hobart, respectively. The vessels are headed for the Southern Ocean to confront the Japanese whaling fleet, which departed last month.

These intelligent highly social mammals die slow agonizing deaths at the hands of whalers. Count me as a SS supporter on this issue only.

I agree. While I think the crew of the SS are kinda loony, they're putting their asses on the line for a good cause. More than I'm doing.

I don't know how the voice over guy on the TV show keeps from breaking up.
Someone failed to secure the smaller craft to the ship and it floated away in the night.
The chase of the whaling vessel ended when the Sea Shepherds accidentally drove over there own prop fouling line...

Their cause may be noble but it’s hard not to pull for the Japanese when you have someone like SS trying to ram or disable your ship in that kind of environment. Hope the whales get away but human lives are more precious.

I’ve never understood the Japanese reluctance to use firearms. Just hit their radar with a shotgun blast, then tag the engines on their inflatable boats with a single rifle bullet each and it’s job done.

Let the Japanese thin the heard. The Marine Mammal Protection act needs to changed. Thinning the heard has positive action. More bait for more smaller fish. In New England there are 40,000 Seals off our coast. They eat the Bellies out of fish like striped bass and only the belly. So the rest of the fish rots and feeds crabs and lobsters. years ago when fishermen could take whales and seals there were more fish. These sea Shepard folks are endangering the lives of all on board to make TV. Would any of them Stand up For The Unborn or the Elderly.

Japan’s whalers are conducting a perfectly legal activity. The whale-huggers are not. End of discussion.

Environmental terrorist or pirates. The authorities should treat them as such.

Count me in, too. Whaling in the modern era is barbaric.

I hate this. My whale oil lamp wasn’t meant for lamp oil from other sources.

John David Rockefeller did more to save the whales than all animal rights organizations COMBINED have done in their histories.
