The 2016 Heisman Trophy finalists were unveiled Monday night with five players earning invitations to the ceremony Saturday night in New York City.
The finalists are: Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook and Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers.
Before Alabama’s Derrick Henry (Running Back) won it last year, a quarterback had taken home the Heisman in five straight seasons. With Jackson considered the heavy favorite, a new streak of quarterbacks could begin in 2016.
In addition to the five finalists, there were quite a few stars who won’t make the trip to New York. Those snubs include Texas running back D’Onta Foreman, Florida State running back Dalvin Cook, Washington quarterback Jake Browning and San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey, who is second in the nation with 2,018 yards and recently moved to No. 3 all-time in career rushing yards.
Here’s more about each of the Heisman finalists:
Lamar Jackson, quarterback, Louisville: Just a sophomore, Jackson has put up insane numbers all season for the Cardinals. In 12 games, Jackson has accounted for 51 total touchdowns — 30 passing and 21 rushing — along with 3,390 passing yards and 1,538 rushing yards. Jackson has been the frontrunner for the duration of the season, but there has been some talk that his performances in Louisville’s two losses to end the regular season could hurt him.
Deshaun Watson, quarterback, Clemson: Watson finished third in the voting behind Henry and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey. Compared to this time last year, Watson’s numbers are better through 13 games. He is sixth nationally 3,914 yards passing (3,512 through 13 games in 2015) and is tied for fifth with 37 touchdowns (30 in 2015).

Jackson started the season like a house afire, but definitely cooled down. I’d pick Watson. Second year in a row he has carried Clemson into the playoff.
I do not really get Peppers at all. While a very good player he just is not Heisman worthy.
As a defensive player, Peppers doesn’t have the stats the others do, but I think he will likely have the best pro career of all of them.
Nah. He’s a runt journeyman in the NFL. The Jets are gonna draft him.
The Jets strategically use the season to ensure a high draft pick every year.
Well, if they're going to be the good at something, might as well be the best average draft selection. One of these years the draft day trade may work in their favor... :-)
Dont forget the Browns. They passed on Ohio native Big Ben Roethlissburger way back. Since Johnny Manziel isnt in the draft this year, who knows what they will do.
Watson is a turn over machine. Jackson is the man
NCAA. Nothing from the West Coast. Nothing West of the Mississippi river. Barely west (Oklahoma). Two from Oklahoma?
At least nobody from Ohio State got picked. Didn’t even win their conference, but ranked 2. Perfect.
I’m an Alabama fan and I’d pick the Alabama defense. Crushimg Heisman contender dreams all season. \s
I’d pick Trace McSorley from Penn State - oh, wait; never mind, he’s white.
MacCaffrey gets skrewed again.. white guys cant play, I reckun.. in the eyes of the Heisman voters anyway.. who seem to be nothing more than a bunch of drunken sots.
Yup. No mention of Fournette at LSU. Fournette's rushing yardage during two games with Alabama = less than 70 yards.
Did you notice that Florida gained ZERO rushing yardage during the SEC championship game Saturday?
