Ralph Peters: What our nation would get with Gen. Mattis as Defense Secretary
Foxnews.com ^ | LUV Ralph Peters

Posted on 12/02/2016 3:55:38 AM PST by RoosterRedux

For General Mattis, the position of Secretary of Defense wouldn’t be just another inside-the-Beltway badge to add to his resume. The greatest danger would be that he would prove too honest for D.C.

Yet another quality Mattis would bring to the office—a vital one—is that he’s a superb listener (yet another rare quality in Washington). He’s not quick to speak, but when he finally does have his say, his words show command of the subject under discussion. And he uses words with the same economy as a rifleman uses bullets: no wasted rounds.

As a member of the Hoover Institution’s Military History Working Group, he’d listen to the rest of us blather on for hours before saying a word. Then he would succinctly, politely and irrefutably explain why we had no idea what we were talking about.

What would the nation get with General James Mattis as Secretary of Defense? Integrity. Deep knowledge. Courage, both moral and physical. Humility. Decency. Vision. A steely sense of duty. Fiscal responsibility. A natural leader of men.

In short, character.

Ralph Peters endorsed Hillary Clinton in this election.

His support of James Mattis would make me really consider whether this is the right guy for the position.

Didn’t you publicly exclaim your love and your vote for Hillary Clinton Ralph? Brilliant strategist you are. I believe you said you were voting for Clinton to save the republic or some such.

“For the last sixteen years, we’ve seen civilians with no military experience launch ill-considered wars and impulsive interventions without considering the second- and third-order effects. Generals, by contrast, are reluctant to send our troops to war—they know the complexity and the cost.”

And they know how to win, if war is needed

General Mattis has a long list of military accomplishments, but I suspect that one of the experiences that cut deepest came in 2004, in Fallujah. After a week of brutal, successful combat his Marines stood within forty-eight hours of a clear-cut victory over a terrorist army. And the Bush administration lost its collective nerve, calling a halt just short of the finish line. I watched the tragedy unfold from northern Iraq, where I was a guest of the Kurds. And we all said the same thing to each other: “We’ll have to go back and finish this.” And we did have to go back, in less than a year.

Wow, I did not know that. Just like his father at the end of the Gulf War. Couldn’t finish the job when it was easy

Ralph Peters announced that he was voting for Hillary rather than Trump. I will never forget or forgive.

No.

Ralph Peters is so thoroughly discredited in my mind that his views shouldn't even be expressed here on FreeRepublic. A piece of gum stuck to the bottom of my shoe would give better insight into a Trump cabinet pick.

“too honest”

Not much of an argument IMO. We need all the honesty we can get as far as I’m concerned.

And they know how to win, if war is needed

But that’s only useful if the politicians allow them to do what is necessary.

Wow. So a turd ball RAT says something nice about a man with an impeccable military record & you want to get all “concerned”?

Grab a hanky & hide in the corner with the rest of the concerned trolls.

I knew Trump was going to make great picks but I’m blown away with this one. Choosing Mattis to run DoD tells me that ISIS is not long for this world.

Trump was evidently dead serious when he vowed to “knock the hell out of ISIS”.

I’m most impressed of all about Mattis’s 7,000 volume library. I have never known an avid reader to be anything less than excellent in anything they choose to do. Liberals collect books to display and put on coffee tables. Conservatives tend to actually read them.

I remember that endorsement.

Freaked me out and showed me that Ralph really just wanted to keep those consulting dollars to keep rolling in so he sided with the MSM.

After having someone called the brown clown running the country having a guy his Marines call MAD DOG chasing down people like the one eyed mullah just suits me fine.

Yes, that was a career destroying and idiotic move on Peters' part but he is not "all left, all the time." Therefore my instinct is to now just ignore anything Peters says. I won't let his praise or denouncement alter my opinion of anybody.

I like Mattis and I also like Peters.
I know Peters endorsed Hillary Clinton and I was really surprised. Colonel Peters is the one who wrote, “When Devils Walk the Earth”, I think I will reserve judgement for now.

I’ll never ever understand Col. Peters decision to vote for Clinton but it shows that the Bible is right when it says professing to be wise they become fools.
