As many adjectives, verbs, and nouns I've used to describe liberal/socialist/communist thinking, envy never occurred to me. I've always seen them as just bleeding heart controlling Utopian fanatics.
I can see it. The Utopian ideal is much more complex and mentally work intensive than those who desire freedom of choice within a simpler societal paradigm. The totalitarian viewpoint is convoluted and must be taxing on their minds.
Thank you for giving another name to what I experienced in the 60's when visiting a commune that, of course, fell apart. The non-producers envied what the producers did and had. However, they were okay with sucking up fruits of the producer with little to no effort. Sound familiar?
Yes, envy. I bet our little "snowflake" students envy those who excel in college nowadays. However, they are taught in early years that self-esteem is more important than effort, so their prevailing attitude is self-indulgence, with some envy thrown in.
