A third of California is on Medi-Cal, and some Republican counties have high rates

Four years ago, when the Affordable Care Act was in its infancy, California had fewer than eight million residents covered by Medi-Cal, its health care program for the poor.

One aspect of what came to be known as Obamacare was an expansion of the program, known in other states as Medicaid, and California fully embraced it. The federal government would cover most costs of both newly eligible residents and previously eligible Californians who would be enrolled by an intensive recruitment campaign.

Today, with Republicans poised to take control of the White House and Congress and promising to repeal Obamacare, 13.5 million Californians have Medi-Cal coverage, a 71 percent expansion since 2014 and more than a third of the state’s population.

It is a massive WELFARE STATE. I have watched it die over most of my life. Now the RAT government and their useful idiots are draining it dry. And their tools keep flowing in over the borders.

“California would have to decide whether to kick millions off the Medi-Cal rolls or cover them with state tax money.”

So it would mean that the ultra liberal Californians would have to be generous with their own money.

I know that’s how they see it. Here in Massachusetts under Romneycare the most anyone can pay for their drugs is $2.65 & if you want to you can wave off that fee & the drug store can not charge you. Meanwhile my elderly mother is paying several hundred dollars a month out of pocket for her meds.

Californians that have some money are not the problem. It is the ones that have no money that expect the ones with money to pay for everything. That is why they keep voting Democrat continuing the bleeding out of what was once a fiscally sound and well managed state. That was almost 40 years ago.

I have more bad news for California. The Democrats picked up a state senate seat and now they have super majorities in both the assemmbly and the state senate. They can pass whatever tax increases they want to. The Republicans are only spectators. Even worse, Jerry Brown is the only one we have to protect us.

This last election showed that most Californians don’t think they’ve been taxed enough yet. Most (maybe all) of the tax-increasing propositions passed because... other people’s money and it’s for the children, or whatever the platitude of the week is.

Here's what I found, and you're right. And it gets worse.

Thanks in part to billions of dollars in federal funding, a third of California’s residents — including half its children — are insured by Medi-Cal, the state’s version of Medicaid.

This doesn't cover all of it either. Children in schools across California receive free health care exams at their schools.

I know this is done for humanitarian purposes, and to prevent health care issues spreading out across the populace at large. Still, there is simply no limit to the great ideas that illegal aliens come up with, to serve their own purposes. People with the best of intentions who are very capable and dedicated, provide these services. None the less, it's on our dime.

If problems are run into, these kids still have to see their own physician. Of course those physician visits are suspect as well, because we pay for that too. That's why half of California's children are on the Medi-Cal roles. LINK

I miss California. I was blessed to be born and raised there (South Lake Tahoe), went to college at FSU (had VDH as a professor of History), worked in Santa Cruz, lived in Monterey but left about 15 years ago when I started my own business. Running a business there is suicide. And you are nothing but an ATM to fund political circle jerks for people in LA or SF.

I dearly miss Tahoe and would love to move back. I’d love to move back to any of the places I lived (except Fresno but it was nice being close to the Sierra Nevadas). But I would be insane to move my business there.

“....But I would be insane to move my business there.”

Very true. I have always said that if I chose to run my own business, I would leave Taxifornia first. I like to share a memory of about 1970, when I read the headline in my local paper which stated that the Governor (conservative Repub) was fighting with the Repub state senate over how to return 3 billion bucks to the public. Yes, the state had a surplus. Something unknown to the tax-and-spend liberal thug government here now. Tens of billions in the hole.

Yes, it was once a great state. Leader in the nation in just about every metric you can imagine...schools, finance, laws, business, responsible government...you name it. Seems like a dream fantasy now.

That is the ticket; when Pelosi compared a government check to a real job, she was merely representing a state where wealth transfers (handouts) from the federal government had created a pseudo-economy of its own. Here in NJ we have the same thing; wide swaths that create no value/wealth living off the largesse of others.
