Ron Glass, Star of 'Barney Miller' and 'Firefly,' Dead at 71

Veteran television and film actor Ron Glass died Saturday at age 71, his agent said Saturday.

Glass died of respiratory failure, Jeffrey Leavitt told NBC News.

"Ron was a private, gentle and caring man," Leavitt said. "He was an absolute delight to watch on screen. Words cannot adequately express my sorrow."

Any avid TV watcher of the last 35 years or so is likely familiar with Glass' face. He is perhaps best known for his Emmy-nominated role as NYPD Det. Ron Harris on the classic cop sitcom "Barney Miller," which aired from 1975 to 1982 on ABC.

Glass is the second cast member from that critically acclaimed show to have passed away this year. The irascible and iconic Abe Vigoda, who played Det. Phil Fish for part of the sitcom's run, died in January at age 94.

For a younger generation of TV viewers, Glass was a standout as the deeply religious preacher Derrial Brook on the 2002 cult science fiction show "Firefly," which was eventually spun off into 2005 feature film — "Serenity" — co-starring Glass.

In real life, the Indiana-born actor was a devout Buddhist and an active member of the SGI-USA Friendship Center in Los Angeles.

Cast members from "Firefly" and "Serenity," including its fanboy favorite star, Nathan Fillion, offered their condolences on social media alongside Glass' longtime fans.

In addition to his parts on "Barney Miller" and "Firefly," Glass popped up in memorable guest appearances on shows as diverse as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" and "Friends."

Absolutely loved Shepherd Derrial Book (not Derrial Brook as shown above) in Firefly. Shepherd Book and Jayne Cobb were my favorite characters on the show. They’ll probably not show how Book was so well connected with the Alliance. I also loved him as Det. Ron Harris in Barney Miller. I’ll miss Ron Glass. He was always fun to watch.

loved watching Barney Miller with my parents... i was in junior high school... loved how New York-y it was... Harris—sarcastic and quite the dandy with his designer clothes...

Ron Glass to me he WAS Shepard Book.

Book: I’ve been out of the abbey two days. I’ve beaten a lawman senseless. Fallen in with criminals. I watched the captain shoot the man I swore to protect. And I’m not even sure if I think he was wrong.

Mal: Well, what about you, Shepherd? How come you’re flying about with us brigands? I mean, shouldn’t you be off bringing religiosity to the fuzzy-wuzzies or some such?
Book: Oh, I got heathens aplenty right here,

Book: A government is a body of people usually—notably—ungoverned.

Zoe: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin’?
Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Ah, hell, Shepherd, I ain’t looking for help from on high. That’s a long wait for a train don’t come.
Shepherd Book: Why when I talk about belief, why do you always assume I’m talking about God?

Shepherd Book: I don’t care what you believe in, just believe in it.

Rest in peace Shepard, They can take the sky from you.

He was very much a gentleman and very popular at Sci-Fi conventions (where I met him).

“Serentiy” rocks!
“Barney Miller” - good clean humor and a wonderful cast

He will be missed
