NEVER ENOUGH TIME
While I have only been an occasional visitor to Washington, I was struck by one scene so strongly that it remains as somewhat of a reference. My first view "up close and personal" of the Pentagon was neither awe-inspiring nor intimidating. To be sure, I was impressed with the size of the building, but that was about it. What came upon me, and has stayed with me, is the image of an ant farm. An enormous one, surely, but an ant farm nonetheless. So many passageways with so many ants constantly traveling them...seemingly endless streams of countless ants going and coming through the entrances. Since this view came on a grey, cold March morning, with barren trees and lingering winter, it seemed all the more depressing. I vowed then never to become one of those ants. I would not let myself be lost as one of the faceless, powerless, unknown minions of the "head ant" in the great farm. Not to mention the echo in my mind, that which is often considered a sarcastic oxymoron: "I'm from Washington, and I'm here to help." Yet something else echoes in my mind. From the Christian Scriptures, the words of the Apostle Paul to the people of Colossae, chapter 4, verse 23: "Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord . . ." For it is then I remember that no matter how small or insignificant my work may seem to me or even to others, I am powerful and effective. My faith reminds me that I am known and loved by my God. More than that, as I do the work, I allow His love to flow through me. And then the work, the worker, and the workplace are transformed into something sacred and beautiful because God is there. No longer dark, dreary, and cold, but bright, cheerful, and warm is the workplace because God's work is being done. No longer nameless, faceless, and powerless, but known, loved, and empowered is the worker doing God's work. The work itself then, too, is transformed into an opportunity to share God's love and joy with others as we struggle to bring peace to His world.

The Red Hackle
November 27, 2016
They will still bear fruit in old age.
Psalm 92:14
Several years ago I stumbled across a bit of fishing lore in a second-century ad work by the Greek writer Aelian. Between Boroca and Thessalonica runs a river called the Astracus, and in it there are fish with spotted skins [trout]. He then describes a snare for the fish, by which they get the better of them. They fastened crimson red wool round a hook and attached two feathers. Then they would throw their snare, and the fish, attracted by the color, comes up, thinking to get a mouthful (On the Nature of Animals).
Fishermen still use this lure today. It is called the Red Hackle. First used over 2,200 years ago, it remains a snare for trout by which we get the better of them.
When I read that ancient work I thought: Not all old things are passéespecially people. If through contented and cheerful old age we show others the fullness and deepness of God, well be useful to the end of our days. Old age does not have to focus on declining health, pining over what once was. It can also be full of tranquility and mirth and courage and kindness, the fruit of those who have grown old with God.
Those who are planted in the house of the Lord . . . shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing (Ps. 92:1314 nkjv).
Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness throughout our lives. Help us finish our lives well in service to You and to remember that old age does not mean uselessness.
As the years add up, Gods faithfulness keeps multiplying.
In todays Scripture, Psalm 92, the psalmist proclaims in verse 12 that the righteousthe faithfulwill flourish like a palm tree and grow like the cedars of Lebanon. The palm tree was associated with valueboth ornamental and economicand palm fronds were already being used in worship (Lev. 23:40). The cedars of Lebanon are almost always used in Scripture to illustrate strength, stability, and majesty. At the time this psalm was written, magnificent evergreen (cedar) forests graced the mountains of Lebanon. With low branches and expansive canopies, these trees can reach up to 100 feet tall. The psalmists prayer is for the righteous to increase like the cedar and blossom like the palm tree.

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.
May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.
May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.
G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

There was no Choir Practice this week, Kathy - we rehearse on Thursdays. Dirt time is mostly over for the season - we still have some work to do in the back garden.
Tuesday-Thursday rehearsals start this week - Mrs. MacNessa and I will be reading, learning and singing new works.

To: Kathy in Alaska; All
From the inspired poem ‘ If ‘ - by Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools

It’s chilly, but not FUBO weather just yet.
I was all set to go to the fabric store and buy the stuff to make Penny’s winter coat, but there was a PETSMART right across the street, so I went there first.
There, amidst all the Santa Suits and Frou-Frou Tutu’s was a nice winter jacket in grey parka material with fleece lining in EXTRA LARGE.
It was marked down to $18.00 for Black Friday, which is about half of what I would have had to pay for materials (cloth, lining, stuffing, binding, Velcro, etc) not even considering LABOR, so I bought it.
It fits Penny, although she is somewhat skeptical of its purpose.
She will appreciate it when the real winter sets in though!
I was going to go to an open mike night in Rockland (named for all the ROCKS in our soil, no doubt), but my knees hurt so much that sitting on a bar stool for 3 hours would be torture.
I will wait for Tuesday where they have real chairs to sit on.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."
