Russia is preparing to upgrade the out of service Soviet-era T-80 battle tanks to beef up its armed forces.

Up to 3,000 of the decommissioned war machines will be given an up-to-date overhaul and rolled out across the Putin's military.

This new cohort of armoured vehicles dwarfs alone Britain's arsenal of tanks six-fold.

Russia already has 15,000 tanks in service - the most in the world - while Britain has just over 400.

The "overhaul and modernisation" of the vehicles will begin next year as Putin continues to boost the military of his resurgent Russia.

Around 550 T-80s are still in use by the Russian army - and these will also be upgraded in the new scheme.

Ivan has a interesting way of counting tanks. They will count any tank in storage with zero consideration of the actual usability of the vehicle. The Soviets claimed they had 25,000 tanks when the Germans invaded. A large portion of them were obsolete, rusted out, and unusable.

Well to be fair, Britain is a small island and has subjugated all of the competition and threats.

Russia.....a tad larger.

According to Wikipedia Russia has around 2,500 tanks in actual service. The rest are in storage most likely rotting away.

I would note that the title says 3000 NEW tanks.

The body of the article says 3000 USED/OLD tanks were sent to be REFURBISHED.

I’ll be impressed when they can actually build 3,000 T-14’s.

They are a giant land country that has experienced numerous European invasions and has very little coastline. Their lines of communication are mostly internal so they have no need for a power projecting navy like ours. So the Russians need tanks, a massive SAM threat, and a retaliatory ICBM threat.

We on the other hand trade in far flung places, and project power all over the world in our “world police” role. (whatever one thinks about whether or not we should have that role)

So we build the most powerful navy on earth, and an Air Force designed on power projection and dominance somewhere else with almost no focus on home defense.

Horses for courses Riding Hood. Its the same reason we will never build that many tanks.

With out the help of Obama for the last eight years they wouldn’t be able to buy 3,000 of the war machines.

That sounds reasonable ..... wonder if they are including such as BMP’s with MBT’s in those numbers though.
