True. The SA were pretty much hard-core Communists in all but name. They truly wanted to kill off the Industrialist class and put all German industry under their control.
Hitler, was more pragmatic, he knew he needed the Industrialists on his side to build the War Machine, and killing off the leadership of the SA greatly assuaged their fears of the Nazis.

I might be completely off base here, but I have an opinion of the whole NAZI vs Communist thing.
Hitler was a Germanophile and racist. When he dabbled in Communism post WWI, he realized that the Communists back then believed in joining with the Soviets. Hitler thought that most Soviets were mongrel breeds. How could a guy that thought Germans were superior bow down to the Soviet?
Around the same time, Mussolini was pushing his “third way” in Italy. Basically Mussolini was a Italian nationalist/socialist.
Hitler was no different than Stalin or Mao, he just thought his “people” were better than all the others.
Hitler reminds me of Ivy league grads thinking that they’re so much smarter than the “peasants” and that we need to be taken care of.
I don't know how much more divorced from reality anyone can be and still be functional.
November 1942....Hitler should have been concentrating on some other things like the impending collapse of Stalingrad since that was when the Soviet counter offensive began with Operation Uranus.
