University statement on 'controversial speaker' Richard Spencer's visit, Aggies express outrage

Richard Spencer, white nationalist and creator of the term “alt-right,” will be speaking in Rudder Tower this December.

Spencer will be speaking on the alt-right movement, a radical offshoot of conservatism which promotes white identity and white nationalism. Spencer’s speech will be focusing on explaining what the alt-right is, and how he believes this movement will affect the United States. Recently, video of a speech Spencer gave at a conference for the National Policy Institute, a think tank for white nationalists and the alt-right, circulated around the internet. Much of the speech included anti-semitic remarks and Nazi rhetoric. At the end of the speech, Spencer said “Heil Trump, heil our people, heil victory,” and several members of the audience gave the Nazi salute.

Preston Wiginton, white nationalist, organizer of the event and member of the alt-right, said the movement is not about saying white people are better than other races, but that white people should be able to separate themselves and have pride. Wiginton has brought white nationalist speakers to the university in the past, and attended the Texas A&M University from 2006 to 2007 before withdrawing to go to Russia. “If we want to have a white state, or a white community or a white homeland we should be able to have that,” Wiginton said. “We respect that for all people. If we look at the NAACP, black people have the right to have that. Why can’t white people have a WAACP?”

If they want to be racists, they should leave Trump out of it. If they want to give the Nazi salute, they need to be imprisoned - with the general population.

Gee...

I hope they retreated to their “Safe Zones” quick enough.

Maybe the school can hand out Emergency Cotton Balls to stuff in the poor little snowflake ears, and instruct them to all say “Lalalalalalalal!” out loud every time someone says something they disagree with.

Higher education... snort. I think not.

As repugnant as the Nazi salute, let alone Nazi anything......it is free speech & imprisonment should never be spoken of.

I'm very interested in hearing what the Freepers have to say about Richard Spencer.

While I'm sympathetic with some of his positions he completely spoils the soup and, IMHO, endangers the alt-right movement with his overt anti-semitism, racism and nazi symbolism (even including his haircut).

Bannon supports alt-right. Bannon does not support this guy. The MSM will do everything they can to destroy Trump via Bannon and right now Spencer is helping them do it.

Imprisoned for giving a Nazi salute?

Being a jerk isn’t a crime.

Some folks see the Nazi salute and the KKK marches as hatred (which it is). I see it as FREEDOM! Same as the liberals marching with their signs and puppets. (All bets are off when it comes to illegally stopping traffic, broken windows or burning crosses on a black person’s property.)

"endangers the alt-right movement with his overt anti-semitism, racism and nazi symbolism"

It's apparent to me from reading various threads on FR the past week that (1) the term "alt-right" is now associated with overt racism and anti-Semitism; (2) many conservatives are confused about to whom the term applies; and (3) to avoid ongoing confusion, any legitimate conservative who previously used that term should abandon it. The expression "alt-right" - if it was ever non-racist - has been thoroughly poisoned.

Nice post and you have nailed it.

But it will be very hard to carry out your recommendation. Although your recommendation is rationale the Internet has a long memory and the equally rationale comments by Steve Bannon about the alt-right (the good parts of it) are going to bite us. That is certainly unfair but the MSM has its own rules. Trump has already felt that bite and there is more to come. This should not be taken as knock on Bannon (who I greatly admire) but it is a fact.

My take on alt-right is that it is a strongly conservative reaction to what I believe to be the widely held view that American culture is under attack. I think a lot of Trump voters agree and logically blame the self-serving but destructive Dem immigration policies for it.

This position is easily twisted into racism by the MSM. In November of 2016 that spin didn't work. Now we need Trump to follow through. If he does maybe we won't need an alt-right movement going forward. Until then we do even if we manage to change it's name. In any case there is going to have to be some push-back on the Richard Spencer wing of alt-right. We will see if that happens.

It is both ironic and revealing that it is liberals who are dragging Spencer out of the closet and giving him a wide hearing. The only reason I can think of is that they want to take advantage of the moment to associate Spencer with Trump. They will use Spencer’s statements to make it sound like Trump is the leader of a neo-Nazi movement, with Spencer as his chief lieutenant and spokesman.

This happened about 13 years ago when I taught at an all black Catholic School. I taught social studies and we, I had 6th graders, were discussing voting & freedom of speech. I thought of the most shocking thing to show them how important freedom of speech is. I asked them why all of us should fight for the right for the KKK to March. They looked at me in horror, but as we got to talking & they understood that they would be protected if they ever protested & marched, they UNDERSTOOD that freedom of speech means for even your worst enemy too. A day I will never forget.

Several years ago I ran into a student in that class, he was in college & waiting tables & after we hugged he told that the day he turned 18 he registered to vote. I repeated the importance of voting over & over until they were sick of hearing it ; )

I would say no way would the cultural atmosphere permit that open discussion now. I would be very afraid of being branded a racist. I hope I’m wrong.

And you are correct, it is FREEDOM!

What does this retard think NAACP means so that he gets “WAACP”?

Yup. That’s exactly what the Dems/MSM will do and are already doing.

What a great story! Thanks for being a teacher - they have such an impact on our lives. As a conservative family in a liberal area, we spent a lot of time undoing our kid’s liberal teachings. Although by Junior High they had it figured out and could hold there own.

Two are home for Thanksgiving - and they were talking about how silly some of the kids (and profs) are at their schools. They were cracking up about something they saw on Facebook a few minutes ago. Some school had set up a table for kids to right stuff down to make them feel better about the election results. Someone left a post-it note that said “Suck it up pussies”. It was turned over to police and is being investigated as a “hate crime”. (Now - whether it all really happened or not - I’m not sure where they got the information from....) But - I could see it as true.

Suck it up you mis-guided Aggies. America has had to put with the alt-left for 8 years. Grow up and act like decent and mature adults.
