It took me decades to realize how different history would have been if Dallas had not happened--and that the Kennedys were nothing but a mirage...
We were fixin’ to go out of town for a day. I heard some kids joking about Kennedy being shot and didn’t take it seriously until arriving in class and the rumor mill was abuzz
When the teacher walked in late, the look on her face gave it away. I can still hear the principal before class ended telling us (”something”) even though President Kennedy is dead”
That, the Cuban Missile Crisis (the look on my-otherwise-always-happy Mom’s face). JFKs speech to the Nation
Mom telling me at breakfast that LBJ will not seek reelection
Mom crying at the news of RFK
The Dim rioting in Chicago (I was there, on the outskirts, just visiting)
Lots of images from the 60s
Thank you for sharing your experience of that day.. The rest of the column is an interesting report of what the lead reporter in Kennedy’s motorcade witnessed. Worth the time to read.
I remember that day! I also remember the day Reagan was shot! ABC news anchor FRANK REYNOLDS that day was running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off reporting on everything that came in!
Then it was mentioned that the gun was bought in Dallas! FRANK REYNOLDS throws his hands in the air and shrieks...”Aggg! DALLAS!”
In some respects, equally as meaningful, if not more meaningful, C. S. Lewis died on November 22, 1963. Now there was a good man.
I was in the base theater ar Hickam AFB, Hawaii, attending a “Charm School”, when a chaplain came out and told us Kennedy had been shot. Ninety minutes later he came out and said he was dead. We observed a moment of prayer and then went outside. The main flag was being lowered to half staff.
Full disclosure: I love conspiracy theories because I don’t believe much that is important or historical is left to chance when powerful people can make things happen.
My pick, the mafia because Joe Kennedy stroked out and didn’t get a chance to call the boys off the mafia’s back when he told Rosselli he would at Christmas time.
Or who benefited the most, had motive and opportunity, LBJ.
I’m 69 and may change my opinion again, but probably not.
Oh, I was a senior in HS and winning the debate tournament at Glendora HS in CA. The tournament was cancelled and we returned to our catholic school in La Verne and watched TV till our rides came and picked us up. The priests were mostly Irish and there was a lot of anger and gnashing of teeth.
The Commie did it, end of story.
Yesterday hell, when that happened I had hair!
