Russia quits Hague Court

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a directive on Wednesday to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Hague. The ICC is meant to be the world's first permanent court and works to prosecute leaders and countries for war crimes, genocide and "crimes against humanity."

In 2000, Russia signed the Rome treaty establishing the ICC, but never ratified it. The ICC was established in 1998, and currently has over 100 member states.

Like Russia, the US also signed the treaty but declared in 2002 that they had "no intention" of ratifying it.

Last Tuesday, the UN General Assembly's Human Rights Committee approved a resolution condemning Russia's "occupation" of Crimea and Sevastopol, and blamed Russia for discrimination against Crimean residents, as well as rights abuses.

Last Monday, the ICC issued a preliminary report describing the events in Crimea as "an international armed conflict between the Ukraine and the Russian Federation."

Russia is also under continuous threat of sanctions and being sued in the ICC, since they are carrying out airstrikes to help Syrian nationals fight ISIS.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia's withdrawal is an issue of "national interests" and explained Putin's decree as a mere formality, since the agreement was never ratified in the first place. He also said Crimea was not occupied but had joined Russia in March 2014 after a legitimate popular vote.

Though Russia does want international crimes dealt with in the ICC, the country is becoming increasingly frustrated with the ICC's ineffectiveness....

Since when does an international body have to be effective? As for one-sidedness, what does Vlad want? A fair consideration of all available evidence, rather than a quick look at what's on TV and what the MSM is saying? They even have satellite, for heaven's sake! He ought to be thankful that all the ICC has spent is a billion dollars, and they only have rendered four verdicts. Ingrate./s

I’m not knowledgeable enough to know if what’s going on in Ukraine is right or wrong.

I’m pretty sure I want the US to have no part of it.

I’m VERY sure Vlad isn’t losing any sleep over it.

I dont care if Russia kills every “moderate” in Syria.

I do care that Syria may go back to financing terror down the line.

I also have heartburn from that last slice of pizza...

Up until the summer of 2013...the Ukraine and the EU were moving toward some type of treaty/arrangement/etc. The Ukraine was set to have the deal of a lifetime, with access to the European market (open door, no issues). Vast situation with manufacturing options (cheaper labor), one of the largest IT university systems in the world at the time, and potential tourism market for the EU.

Rather than do this in very small steps and start with something simple like agricultural products being easy access....the EU came in with gang-busters and wanted a full-up treaty. All Russia could see is the Ukraine being a part of NATO within a couple of years. The EU crowd screwed this up to the ninth-degree....never grasping what kind of mess would be created by this massive step.

When the Ukraine leadership (the President) realized just how frustrated the Russians were....he tried to back out, and the Parliament just weren’t going to accept that.

The US didn’t really help matters, and the number of ethnic Russians in the Ukraine are part of the issue as well. You can basically count up to thirty-odd ethnic groups in the Ukraine....so it’s not a place where you want chaos.

The EU treatment of Russia? They went with Obama’s plan of isolating Russia and eliminating trade. This has screwed up the trade balance between the EU and Russia, but China helped to make up for the loss of trade. So in the end, there are a lot of people looking at the EU for their stupid behavior, and the US for some bad decisions.

Great post. Thanks.

Then I can definitively say I dont want to go to war with Russia over what looks on the map like an Incredibly tiny part of Ukraine.

I know it’s still an invasion, but you describe well how the EU ####ed things up and we would not have been thrilled with Mexico becoming part of the USSR.

If there is such a thing as a ‘moderate jihadi’ or ‘moderate Islamist’ or ‘moderate terrorist’ as supporters of the Syrian Civil War insist, they are the ones being killed by the Russians.

The noise about ‘atrocities’ is a distraction from the fact that ‘our jihadis, our Islamists, our terrorists’ are being killed which bothers our ruling elites.

It bothers them so much that they constantly push the notion that ‘war crimes’ are being committed by Russia in Syria, so we have this pre-emptive action by Russia.

Great post.

And that will all end with Trump as president.

McCain is nobody and nothing and just Desperately wants our boys to die, why I dont know.

He’s a fool who posed with the “moderates”.

What does moderate mean for a muslim anyway? They dont torture you, they just shoot you quickly in the head?

Good Trump should do the same.

If Trump wants to “drain the swamp”, then he needs to give the power back to the States and ultimately the people.

Wouldn’t be surprised. Screw ‘em. Screw what they want to do to IDF officers. Screw what they want to do to Putin. Screw whatever they might want to do to Trump. They’re there to discourage decisive action by brave men against real menaces, and to look the other way when it comes to the most vile criminals in the world. This is their raison d’etre, and those are some sour raisins.

Amen and pass the sweet bread.

I could not agree with you more but that "power back to the State" stuff is in the Constitution and well just not part of the list.

At least not on my check off sheet that I am following

Exactly.

The US should never subject its warriors to a foreign judicial system for punishment. This is something taken care of by the US only.

I am sure (keeping fingers crossed) this is something that this Congress will not push and for sure something that (fingers uncrossed) Trump will not back

Interesting. I don’t think I’ve seen the issue from that perspective before. Makes a lot of actions come into better focus. Where can we read more?
