A San Antonio police officer writing out a traffic ticket to a motorist was shot to death in his squad car Sunday outside police headquarters by another driver who pulled up from behind, authorities said. San Antonio police Chief William McManus identified the officer as Det. Benjamin Marconi, 50, a 20-year veteran of the force.
McManus said the suspect had not been apprehended Sunday night. He said he doesnt believe the man has any relationship to the original motorist who was pulled over, and no motive has been identified.

Terrible news. I am sorry for his family and friends. Another victim of Obama’s war on the police? I hope they catch the bastard who did this.

Gotta be a whole lot more to this story.
As a detective, it was normal to carry a citation book around because a lot of the “felony” cases that landed on your desk ended up being simple Class C misdemeanors that could be resolved with a citation.
However, it was not normal to make routine traffic stops as a detective without a marked unit for backup, unless maybe you were were working some sort of uniformed overtime assignment.
Like I said, there has to be more to this.
I’ll add this. When you’re in your patrol car writing a ticket or checking someone’s I.D. or some such, you need to be checking every avenue of approach every half second or so. You can’t get engrossed with writing “War and Peace” on the back of that accident report you’re filling out.

He was likely working OT and volunteered for traffic/patrol or maybe filling in on traffic detail or whatever. I would doubt there is anything mysterious or hidden about it.

It was my first thought. Then again, I could be wrong. We’ll see.
