Trump to Meet With Romney as He Starts to Look Outside His Inner Circle
The New York Times ^ | November 19th, 2016 | By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald J. Trump on Saturday moved to mend fences with political rivals after a divisive campaign, meeting with Mitt Romney, who had scathingly criticized him during the race as “a phony” and “a fraud,” to discuss naming him as secretary of state.

The outreach signaled a change in tone one day after Mr. Trump moved to elevate hard-liners to pivotal national security positions. It was not clear whether Mr. Trump would offer the State Department post to Mr. Romney, or whether Mr. Romney, who has broken sharply with him on Russia, free trade and other issues, would accept if he did.

But some strategists argued that merely by reaching out to Mr. Romney, Mr. Trump was demonstrating an openness to new people and ideas, even from the unlikeliest of sources. It may also be intended to inject the sort of unpredictability and spectacle into the transition process that the president-elect thrives on.

During a weekend of transition talks at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., Mr. Trump was scheduled to hold a series of discussions with what his aides described as a diverse array of potential advisers. The conversations were aimed at demonstrating that the president-elect was willing to look beyond his loyal inner circle to fill his administration.

If there were some real assurance that Romney would not betray Trump and that he would faithfully carry out Trump's Foreign Policy, he may be a good choice for SoS.

The US has a history of independent thinking SoS. They are 4th in the line of Presidential succession.

I hope it is just to learn what not to do.

Romney has no place in anything.

Does ROMNEY have the art of the deal to make treaties that support TRUMP’S foreign policies? His public statements indicate a resounding “NO.”

If there were some real assurance that Romney would not betray Trump and that he would faithfully carry out Trump's Foreign Policy, he may be a good choice for SoS.

There are thousands of other people who are as well qualified or better qualified, and have not proven themselves to be:

a) Liberal enough to be comfortable members of the Democratic Party.
b) Unalterably opposed to Trump and his agenda.

In short, I can think of no good reason to include Romney in any capacity in Trump's cabinet or staff. I'm amazed this meeting is even taking place.

Romney has a history of timidity and polish.

The timidity side can be strengthened under orders and support from the POTUS.

Did anyone see Romney leave?

He was rude and embarrassed himself!

Not even Secretary of the Treasury?

Why? What's so indispensable about Romney that he must be included in the cabinet as head of any department? You'll have a man heading Treasure who is known to despise Trump, who will either look the other way or actively encourage Treasury officials if they seek to undermine or ignore Trump administration directives. What possible benefit would there be? Trump will not co-opt the wishy-washy wing of the GOP by bringing one of it's leaders into the administration.

Trump should select one of the many other men or women qualified for the position who aren't open enemies of his agenda.

If President Trump has a small number of people with Romney-like views, that may be harmless. Put them in charge of Education, Energy, and EPA until those posts are eliminated. If Trump chooses too many big government liberals like Mitt Romney, I will worry.

“In short, I can think of no good reason to include Romney in any capacity in Trump’s cabinet or staff. I’m amazed this meeting is even taking place. “

There was a time when the various security organizations were told they couldn’t make deals with criminals. (I think President Carter did this.) Sources needed to be as pure as the driven snow. Unfortunately, people who are pure and wonderful don’t have access to anything of value to the security organizations. So, they went back to dealing with criminals and low-lifes.

The other wonderfully qualified people have nothing to trade. Trump is a deal maker. You can be assured that Mitt has something Trump wants or needs. He’ll sit down with the Devil to get it. Isn’t that the kind of man we need?

You make a logical point.

Romney can show leadership but deep down he is a follower.

Trump could enable him to understand his flaws and be a productive member of service.

Don’t do it. Please, don’t do it. Romney is a fraud and a RINO. He is a status quo establishment tool.

Totally agree with you...

It has been 1 1/2 hr. since their scheduled meeting...hope is is finished and the media can calm down and begin treating Trump and Pence with some respect.

Trump is a genius. He has devolved the press into whirling dervishes, as they shout Chaos! Turmoil! Rollercoaster! Scrambling! Disarray! Stalled! Upended!
