Greenland used to be a Green Land; thats how it got its name. I've heard that Erik the Red named it Greenland as a PR move to get more Norse to move there. It probably wasn't much different than now, but it got a lot colder in the Little Ice age that eventually ended their colony.

Greenland worked for the Vikings until with gradual GLOBAL COOLING they were unable to harvest enough animal feed during summer to sustain them in winter
