In just two months' time, the world will bid farewell to President Obama. In his final overseas trip before exiting the White House next January, Mr. Obama stood alongside his German counterpart Angela Merkel at a press conference in Berlin, warning against a "meaner, harsher, more troubled world."
In the wake of last week's stunning electoral victory by Donald Trump and the Republican Party, he seemed a diminished figure, as did Mrs. Merkel, the guardian of a liberal ancien regime that is beginning to crumble on both sides of the Atlantic.
The winds of change are sweeping through the West, challenging decades of conventional wisdom, overturning the dominant liberal consensus, and reviving a greater sense of national identity and self-determination. Without a doubt, the extraordinary victory by the Vote Leave campaign in Britain's EU referendum was a precursor to the November presidential election in the US, with an emphatic humbling of the political establishment against all odds and all expectations. Though the Brexit campaign was in many respects different to that of Mr. Trump in both style and messaging, both succeeded in delivering a political earthquake that shook the global political order.

Radical leftism has been afoot since at least the French Revolution. So it will not go away entirely. What changes is the degree to which it's basic tenets- egalitarianism and political correctness- are embraced by the public at large. If Trump really does turn out to be the Destroyer, we may indeed see the beginning of a new age.
Will liberals listen? Don't bet on it.

If anyone thinks we are “witnessing the end of the Liberal era”, just look at government spending over the past 30 years. It keeps going up no matter who is in charge.

Consider all of the death and human misery caused by socialist elites pretending things to be true that aren't true:
- Pretending that black people aren't people=>slavery;
- Pretending that Jewish people aren't people=>holocaust;
- Pretending that preborn people aren't people=>legalized abortion;
- Pretending that homosexuality is normal=>problems are just beginning.
Not to mention the deaths and misery in Russia, China, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba...

Yes, it does, and it is a source of some amazement that ruling elites haven't learned from experience that it can be dismissed in contempt as "nationalism" but it can't be stamped out. Practically every empire in history has tried to, or something like it. The Assyrians couldn't make the Egyptians less Egyptian, the Persians learned it about the Greeks in Ionia in 499 BC (and twice more in Greece herself in the ensuing 20 years), the Romans and the Arabs and the Ottomans all learned it. The Mongols found that even extermination didn't work. The Soviets, the same.
And yet, for some reason I attribute to arrogance, the current internationalist elite seem to think that they can force the issue by eliminating borders, subsuming national governments, and forcing demographic change, as if these were new ideas. They are very lucky that the issue is being addressed at the ballot box, because it almost never is, and what ends up happening is a revolution all right, but not the one they want.
The current proprietors of the EU will not, I think, either weld that continent into a single nation state nor will they tear that continent apart much further than it began. They're likely to make an awful mess in the meantime, though.
Oh, yes, and those Americans - here is a nation-state with no particular debt to ethnic identity that shouldn't exist, at least not if certain assumptions about how nation-states form are valid. And yet here we are. You'd think that certain fervent internationalists would be checking those premises pretty closely, wouldn't you?
The word “liberal” only fits because they liberally give our money to others and liberally abandon the bedrocks of 10,000 years of civilization.
