Brilliant has the best reply. I recall, from a while back an army general being asked by a group of Texans whether they could secede.

HIs response was (to paraphrase) that such a question had already been settled.

From sea to sea the U.S. is our land. If you don’t like it then leave. It would be good for California as the housing crisis should resolve itself then.

Perhaps governor moonbeam should be first.

This sentiment does not square with what the genuine expression of American political philosophy: “That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government ...”

Back in 1990, the ruling elite in the Kremlin thought the government and borders of the USSR had been settled in 1945 in much the same way.
