The day after the 2016 election for president, General Motors announced it was laying off another 2,000 workers in plants in Ohio and Michigan, two states that gave President-elect Donald Trump a major victory on Tuesday.
GM said the layoffs will affect the third shifts in the plants in Lordstown, Ohio, and Lansing, Michigan, which build the low-selling cars sold under the Chevrolet and Cadillac brand names.
The Lordstown plant builds the compact Chevrolet Cruze, whose U.S. sales through October were down 20%, Fortune magazine reported. The Lansing Grand River plant builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS, whose sales were down 17% through October.
Earlier this year, General Motors informed investors and the car-buying public that it was increasing its presence in Mexico by investing upwards to $691 million to build new plants and expand current ones south of the border.
At the time, GM Mexico President Ernesto Hernandez celebrated the investment for what it will do for the Mexican economy.

It will be interesting to see if and how Trump gets his Tariffs in place... way way way too many establishment republicans are sitting in seats that will fight this...
Public is going to have to rise up to make this happen, Trump can’t do this alone.
Government Motors holds-off until after the news can’t hurt Hillary. Hmmmmm......
Traffis never have worked out and they never will

“Government Motors holds-off until after the news cant hurt Hillary. Hmmmmm......”
Good interpretation, I agree...
A big reason Trump won was because of this kind of stuff. I hope he can rectify that somehow...if he can they will be red for a long long time...
These layoffs were coming for a while now.
Somebody convince these companies to wait until after the election.
I wonder why?
the jobs will be brought back. bigly.
What happened to the bail out you and I paid for?
I want my money back Barky.
Let’s find out.
I bet that most of the workers at those plants had an idea of what was coming, and a lot of them voted for Trump.
Jawboning works, and that’s what Trump is talking about under the guise of making his phone call to the company presidents. There are no (zip zero nada) barriers to taking jobs out of the country now other than the company’s own economics. The threat of tarriff or taxes will start to constrain those decisions, although in the case of GM, these cutbacks could well be in part a result of previous government meddling by Obama.
We already have
When? Was it when Reagan put them in to save Harley Davidson?
When the money starts returning maybe give the business to a new startup car company, it can be done ...
Better than Tariffs would be to get domestic energy down so that the cost of production is let in the US...that fixes the problem long term.
Cutting corporate tax rates can have an effect similar to that of tariffs but without the "trade war" issues.
All the tax payer $ GM received went to its overseas operations.
Chevrolet Cruze - can’t tell you how many of these I’ve seen on the side of the interstate being put on a flatbed.
